Fresh look to Pangos Frosh/Soph Camp in Texas

October 2, 2022 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

DUNCANVILLE, TX – The second stop on the annual fall Pangos regional Frosh/Soph schedule tipped off Saturday.

And it was quite the day, indeed, for the frosh portion of the All-South camp version of the camp in the Duncanville Fieldhouse in this Dallas suburb.

A flock of sophomores from throughout the southern region of the country were superb Saturday, among those being the New Orleans Isadore Newman trio of Christopher Cenac Jr.  (6-foot-8), Christopher Birden (6-7) and Kobe Butler (6-4).

Also in that category were the likes of Ethan Carter (6-7) of Fairburn (GA) Arlington Christian; Kentrell Martin (6-5) of Dover (FL) Strawberry Crest; Christopher Lindo (6-6) of Baton Rouge (LA) Madison Prep; Jaylon Dean-Vines (6-3) of Mesquite (TX) Poteet and Patton Pinkins (6-4) of Wolfforth (TX) Frienship – as well as a kid who came from the not-quite-so southern high school of Peoria (IL) Manual, 6-5 Dietrich Richardson.

Frank’s Top 15 performers for Frosh/Soph All-West

September 26, 2022 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LONG BEACH – A hefty portion of the better western-based high school basketball players from the Classes of 2025 and ’26 wrapped up play September 25 afternoon at McBride High during the Pangos Frosh/Soph West Camp.

And, from the minute he walked into the building Saturday evening until he left Sunday afternoon, Tounde Yessoufou was on a different plateau than any of the other 200-plus players who participated.

The 6-foot-6 sophomore scored 28 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the team wearing dark jerseys to a 119-113 victory over the white jerseys in the Top 30 Cream of the Crop All-Star Game.

Yes! Tounde just too strong and two skilled to be checked at Pangos Saturday

September 25, 2022 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LONG BEACH, Ca. – Tounde Yessoufou continued to use his metaphorical – but powerful – hammer to pound away at the various “Best in the West and National” Class of 2025 ratings Saturday night during Day 1 of the two-day Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp at McBride High.

The 6-foot-6 Santa Maria (CA) St. Joseph sophomore, a late arrival along with St. Joseph teammate, 6-3 freshman Julius Price, smashed rims and defenders’ egos with equal aplomb on the final (of 10) rounds of games Saturday night.

Ryse-Up Fall Classic on tap this weekend at Redondo

September 23, 2022 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

REDONDO BEACH, Ca. – The sixth annual Ryse-Up Fall Classic boys’ basketball event will be played Saturday and Sunday at Redondo Union High – the alma mater of the late basketball standout whose memory it’s held in honor of.

Ryse Williams, a four-year varsity player and twice all-CIF selection at Redondo, died from the effects of a rare form of cancer – renal medullary carcinoma (which affects the kidneys) – on June 22, 2017, just a day before he was scheduled to take part in Redondo’s graduation ceremony.

Forty players mentioned in Pangos Showcase rundown!

September 19, 2022 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LONG BEACH – Sunday’s Pangos Best of the SoCal Fall Showcase proved another ideal “evaluation” event for a look at some of the better high school players in the region – and using it to gauge how some of the teams will look, too, in the 2022-23 season.

Five games – across the classes of 2027 (current eighth grader), ’26 (freshmen), ’25 (sophomores), ’24 (juniors) and ’25 (seniors) – were played at McBride High, which will also play host to the Pangos All-Frosh/Soph West Camp next Saturday and Sunday.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
