SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Ca. – The Northern- and Southern-based California programs split the 10 bracket championship games played Sunday to tie a bushel of ribbons and bows on the third Boys’ Cali Live basketball tournament on the conclusion of its final day.

The CIF Southern Section’s St. John Bosco, Harvard-Westlake, JSerra, Millikan and Oak Hills took crowns, while the upper half of the state got titles via Richmond Salesian, Amador Valley, San Ramon California, St. Ignatius and Branson.

June 28, 2025 By Frank Burlison 21 Comments

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – Pretty much every standout California- basketball guard from the classes of 2026, ’27 and ’28 drew the rapt attention from college coaches from across the country Friday during the first day of the third Boys California Live/presented by SCIBCA at the Ladera Sports Center and San Juan Hills high.

And a kid who is nearly fourth months away from playing his first regular-season high school game made sure that the Class of 2029 was well-repped, too.

Will Conroy, Jr. scored 31 points afternoon as Village Christian dropped an “overtime” (in the case, the first team hitting four points was awarded the win) loss to Branson, 63-60, early Friday afternoon at San Juan Hills, which is located about five minutes southeast of the LSC, the eight-court facility in Ladera Ranch that is the hub of the event.

Although the event – at which the bulk of the better high school programs in California gather, represented by their projected rosters for the following season – began two years ago and was held at multiple Orange County sites, this is just the second times it’s been in SoCal.

The California Interscholastic Association (CIF) decreed that the “host” of the event alternate each June.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
