November 16, 2023 By Frank Burlison 601 Comments

LOS ANGELES — Wednesday night’s game was a long time coming for Eastvale Roosevelt High basketball players Brayden Burries and Issac Williamson.

City power Birmingham, 80-37, in a season opener at Westchester High during the third Westside Tip-Off Classic.

Burries (who scored 31 points with nine rebounds Wednesday night) and Williamson were freshmen standouts at Riverside Poly when the Bears lost to visiting St.

An introduction to SoCal’s Top 30 boys’ hoops teams

October 30, 2023 By Frank Burlison 69 Comments

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – Unlike many of his counterparts, Harvard-Westlake boys’ basketball coach David Rebibo didn’t send his team into “fall league” competition until a few weeks ago.

But when the 2023-24 Wolverines did take the court, notably at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas (the Oct. 13-15 Border League); at St. Francis  in La Canada (the Oct. 20 Beat Cancer Challenge) and, this past Saturday, at Heritage Christian in Northridge (the Core Prep Fall Classic), they made this abundantly clear with the “real” season set to start on Nov.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
