Oh-so-many hoopsters on display in L.V.

September 29, 2011 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

LAS VEGAS – The presence of Shabazz Muhammad and Rosco Allen on the bench, and the addition of non-Gaels such as Katin Reinhardt to the roster took away a lot of the true “Bishop Gorman vs. Findlay Prep” flavor to the contest Wednesday night.

That conceded, there didn’t appear to be many among the crowd in the Bishop Gorman gymnasium demanding their $10 admission back after the finale of the Fullcourt Press Las Vegas Fall Classic.

The lead changed hands three times in the final 47 seconds, with a 3-point attempt by Reinhardt (Santa Ana, CA, Mater Dei) just missing with three seconds remaining and Julian Jacobs’ follow attempt swatted away at the buzzer by Amedeo Della Valle to secure Findlay Prep’s 81-80 victory over the “Best of Vegas” squad in the capper to the five-game event.

What happens in Vegas Wednesday night

September 27, 2011 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

At least nine of the best 100 or so players in the national prep basketball senior class are expected to be in the same gymnasium Wednesday night.

The “Best of Vegas” is on tap at Bishop Gorman High in Las Vegas, with the evening’s action scheduled to culminate in a game featuring the Findlay Prep team taking on a squad heavily populated by Bishop Gorman’s plethora of elite prospects.

Gorman’s four high major-bound seniors – Shabazz Muhammad, Rosco Allen, Ben Carter and Demetris Morant – along with future UNLV guard Katin Reinhardt (Santa Ana, CA, Mater) will pace the “Best of Vegas” team that faces Findlay Prep at 9 p.m.

Little brothers, big talent at St. John Bosco

September 26, 2011 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

The roundtrip drive – 158 miles visa the 73 Toll Road and 405 and 101 Freeways, spanning about two hours and 20 minutes of real time – was definitely worth it Sunday.

My Laguna Niguel to Woodlands Hills trek gave me the opportunity to watch eight games over about nine hours and 15 minutes during the Buzz Basketball/HoopLove Varsity Fall Classic Sunday in the Taft High gymnasium.

The games – involving 12 teams, three or four of which will rated among Southern California’s 10 best going into the 2011-12 season – put some of the most well-known talent in the Southland on display.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
