Check out the sweet hoops in the OC

January 14, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

VILLA PARK, CA – Are you craving some quality high school basketball action to watch, up close and personnel, today?

Then I suggest out make the trek to north Orange County to visit Villa Park High (18042 Taft Avenue in Villa Park) to watch Coach Kevin Reynolds’ Coaches vs. Cancer Showcase.

The first of five games gets underway at 2 o’clock, when Huntington Beach Edison takes on Redondo Beach Redondo.

The next four games: 3:30, Anaheim Canyon vs. Huntington Beach; 5, Palm Springs vs. Cerritos Gahr; 6:30, Villa Park vs.

My mid-season Top 25 Wooden nominees

January 9, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA — Not surprisingly, my top 25 nominees for the John R. Wooden Award mid-season list is heavily laced with players from North Carolina (four) and Kentucky (three) – 28 percent of the nominees, in fact.

There are four freshmen among the 25, Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist of Kentucky, Trey Burke of Michigan and Cody Zeller of Indiana. Two other freshmen, guards Austin Rivers of Duke and Kevin Pangos of Gonzaga, were my final two cuts.

The Atlantic Coast Conference (led by the Tar Heels, of course) is the most heavily represented conference with six selections.

A most enjoyable Saturday of BB spent in San Diego

January 8, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

SAN DIEGO – Appropriately enough on Saturday, the final game capped the six-game San Diego-Los Angeles Challenge, sponsored by State Farm Insurance, in fine fashion.

The host Lincoln High Hornets – led by twin juniors Tyree and Tyrell Robinson – took on Woodland Hills Taft, the prohibitive favorite to win the L.A. City title, in that finale.

And, despite falling behind by 15 points late in the second quarter against the stalwart defense of Coach Jason Hart’s Toreadors, the Hornets gave their fans plenty to get hyped about.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

Frank Burlison is one of the most knowledgeable basketball people in the business! His passion for the game puts him at the top of the list. There are very few people whose evaluation skills I trust like I do Frank’s!

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.

Director of International Basketball, Nike
