Poly, Bishop Gorman headed for title battle?

September 16, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LYNWOOD, CA – Two of the most successful high school programs in the West gave every indication on Saturday that they are bound for a hook-up Sunday afternoon for the championship of the 20th Fullcourt Press Fall Hoops Classic

The Long Beach (CA) Poly Jackrabbits and Las Vegas (NV) Bishop Gorman Gaels cruised to a couple of pool-play victories apiece Saturday at Lynwood High to advance to Sunday morning’s (11:20) championship-round semifinals.

Poly, which knocked off the MOC Stars and Belmont Shore Gold, will take on the San Diego All-Stars (2-0 in Pool B) on Court 2 while Bishop Gorman faces Branch West Prep on Court 1.

Classes of 2015 and 2016 well-represented Sunday

September 10, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

LOS ANGELES, CA – The annual Fullcourt Press Fall Showcase usually proves to be just that – especially when it comes to some of the very best of the prep talent in the Southern California freshmen and sophomore classes.

And that was definitely the case once more during the eight or so hours of action Sunday at Ribet Academy, which is located just a few miles from Dodger Stadium.

The Top 20 Freshman contest – OK, so there were actually 22 players who saw action in that tilt – feature a significant number of the top prospects whose “real high school” debuts are still a little less than three months away.

Big turnout for Southland preps

September 2, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

CORONA, CA –  The first-ever venture into Southern California by Joe Davis’ North-Carolina-based  Scoutsfocus.com Saturday drew a turnout of some of the better prep prospects in the region – especially from the Class of 2015.

The gathering of approximately 200 players – each of which played three times in the vent that ran from 9 a.m. to about 4:30 p.m. – also attracted a scattering of players from Nevada, Arizona and Northern California.

Who played extremely well – regardless of class – on Saturday?

I’d opt for (alphabetically): Sedrick Barefield, Julio Guity, Victor Joseph, Kendall Small and Stephen Thompson Jr.

My all-adidas Nations choices

August 8, 2012 By Frank Burlison 3 Comments

LONG BEACH, CA – The three days and one night of the adidas Nations put some of the better high school and college players from the United States at front and center – and some players from Australia should have taken some bows for their nifty performances as well.

In the championship final Monday night at Long Beach City College, the USA 2014 Red squad – which had lost by 14 points to USA 2013 Blue during pool play the previous day – won a rematch, 86-84.

NBA-flavored adidas Nations final

August 6, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

LONG BEACH, CA – The TV matchups are set for the 2012 of adidas Nations third-place and championship games Monday night at Long Beach City College.

And a couple of former NBA standouts, serving as coaches, will lead their respective teams into the title game (set to tip off at approximately 9:30 p.m. ET).

The CBS Sports Network will televise both games, with one of the sport’s great play-by-play announcers – Joel Meyers – calling the action.

The team from Australia – featuring two of the best teen-aged prospects in the world, 6-foot-8 Ben Simmons and 6-5 Dante Exum, who turned 16 and 17, respectively, just a couple of weeks ago – will face USA 2014 Blue (juniors-to-be from the United State) at 8 o’clock (ET).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
