Johnson-led Monarchs roll to 17th win

January 10, 2013 By Frank Burlison 5 Comments

BELLFLOWER, Ca. – Until proven otherwise, the Mater Dei Monarchs remain – as usually the case – in the pole position for “best team in Southern California – and the rest of the state, too” honors.

And, after his performance while leading his team to an impressive Trinity League victory over the host St. John Bosco Braves, someone in Southern California is going to have to dazzle us to demonstrate that they are as good, much less better, than Mater Dei’s standout junior, Stanley Johnson.

A wrap on the final 2012 week of prep hoops

December 31, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – Some extensive navigating of the Southern California freeway system was involved, but the final Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday of 2012 provided a wonderful way to wrap up the December portion of the high school hoops season.

I spent Wednesday at Torrey Pines High in San Diego County, watching the first round of National Division games that made up the 23rd edition of the Torrey Pines Holiday Classic.

Teams that impressed me were Richmond Salesian, Sacramento Sheldon, Los Angeles Windward, San Diego St.

December 25, 2012 By Frank Burlison 10 Comments

PALM SPRINGS, Ca. – The MaxPreps Holiday Classic gets underway Wednesday with the Invitational Division the headliner from among the 10 boys’ varsity divisions from which teams will be competing for titles over the next four days.

Foremost among the nationally known elements in the Invitational Division field are Richmond (TX) Fort Bend Travis, led by Kentucky-bound twins Andrew and Aaron Harrison, and Los Angeles Loyola, which is off to an 8-0 start behind the play of junior point guard Parker Jackson-Cartwright.

First-round games Wednesday will be played at three sites: Cathedral City High, Palm Desert High and College of the Desert (a community college).

Tremendous matchups at Torrey Pines Holiday Classic

December 25, 2012 By Frank Burlison 2,165 Comments

SAN DIEGO – Most of the first 22 Torrey Pines Holiday Prep Classic events can easily be classified as among the very best of the post-Christmas boys hoops tournaments – both regionally and nationally.

And the 23rd version of the event – sponsored by Under Armour – figures to slip neatly into that category as well.

Five separate tournaments – the National, American, Mayor’s, Governor’s and Senator’s – will once again be held under the banner of the TPHPC, with the National Division stacked with its usual cache of top-flight programs, from within California and beyond.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
