September 22, 2013 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

SAN DIEGO – When it comes to high-quality high school basketball events, with an optimum in top-flight teams and players alike, displayed in easy on the eyes – and butts – viewing settings, Charlie Mercado and his San Diego-based Gamepoint program always deliver the goods.

And that was the case again Saturday during the first day of the two-day, Gamepoint- and Top Gun-hosted San Diego High School Showcase, held in the Miramar Community College Costco-like gymnasium, where, for most of the schedule that began at 9 a.m.,

Freeway system proves San Diego to Cerritos BB segue

September 15, 2013 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

All of the kids in San Diego County have been back in their classrooms for more than couple of weeks now.

But why quibble with semantics when there is basketball to be played?

And the first-ever BruinsSportsReport.com “Back to School Showcase”, held on Saturday morning and early afternoon at Palomar Community College (in San Marcos), provided a nifty display of the caliber of hoops talent occupying those classroom seats.

Some 50 players were on hand for games that tipped off a bit after 9 a.m. and then wrapped up at about 2 p.m.

Dorsey and Hamilton help SJB hold off Utah’s best

September 14, 2013 By Frank Burlison 227 Comments

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, Ca. – The obvious question leading into the Fall Showcase hosted by the Santa Margarita High boys’ basketball program on Friday and Saturday was – and should have been – “why is a team all the way from Utah doing here?”

The answer is “because (Highland) Lone Peak Coach Quincy Lewis has a great relationship with the Santa Margarita coach from the days of being Jeff Reinert’s assistant at Utah Valley State College.”

And that’s why Lewis’ Knights, 26-1 in 2012-13 when they were fielded the best “public” school team in the land, ventured into Southern California – Orange County, specifically – for some five games in about a 24-hour stretch of the weekend.

Stanley Johnson among the FCP Showcase standouts

September 9, 2013 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

BELLFLOWER, Ca. – The “official” start to the high school basketball season in Southern California is still some 2 ½ months away.

But many of the players that will be integral parts of the 2013-14 campaign converged in the St. John Bosco High gymnasium Sunday.

The Fullcourt Press Fall Showcase attracted some of the best players in the Southland, as is annually the case. Its college standouts- and current NBA players-dotted roster of alumni will attest.

Eight games, with players representing six high school classes (current seventh-graders thru seniors), were played over the course of about nine hours.

EAT event showcases best on Utah hoops prep scene

September 8, 2013 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

SALT LAKE CITY – An encompassing look at the best of high school basketball in Utah, now and into the not-so-distant future, was on display Saturday during the second Elite Athletic Training (EAT) Utah Showcase at West High.

As was the case a year ago, Christian Popoola and his Las Vegas-based EAT organization provided the platform and approximately 75 players took advantage to show why middle school and high school hoops in Utah are humming along so nicely.

Two of the very best prep standouts in the Class of 2014 – regionally and nationally – have already revealed which universities they plan to sign letters of intent with in November.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
