Redondo Union hoops standout Mayes re-opens his recruiting following CMU coach firing

April 4, 2025 By Frank Burlison 458 Comments

Hudson Mayes,  first-team, all-CIF Southern Section Open Division and BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal seniors squad from Redondo Union, announced on social media Friday that he has re-opening his recruiting.

The 6-foot-5 Mayes made the decision following Central Michigan University firing Coach Tony Barbee Thursday. He signed a National Letter of Intent with the program in November.

His move means that he is among the upper tier of “available” big guard/small forward “wing” prospects now available to colleges from the Class of 2025.

Mayes had one of the strongest senior seasons of any player in California, earning all-Platinum Division honors during the Tarkanian Classic and Classic at Damien in December where the Sea Hawks were a combined 6-2 in the two strongest tournaments in the west.

Notre Dame guard is SoCal’s top sophomore

April 2, 2025 By Frank Burlison 362 Comments

LAGUNA NIGUEL – NaVorro Bowman was a four-time, first-team all-pro during his eight seasons as an NFL linebacker and is into his second season as the linebackers’ coach for Jim Harbaugh and the L.A. Chargers.

His namesake son wasn’t anything close to as physically imposing – at 6-2 and 160 pounds – during his recently completed sophomore season for the Sherman Oaks Notre Dame basketball team as his 245-pound pops was while manhandling NFL running backs and quarterbacks.

But Junior terrorized plenty of opponents while helping the Knights win 28 games – with two of those losses coming to eventual State Open champion Eastvale Roosevelt in the CIF Southern Section and State Regional Open finals.

Tyran Stokes takes BurlisonOnBasketball top honor for Class of 2026

March 28, 2025 By Frank Burlison 434 Comments

LAGUNA NIGUEL – Tyran Stokes made his first “real” high school season a memorable one – even if he and his Sherman Oaks Notre Dame teammates couldn’t quite get over the “Roosevelt hump”.

The 6-foot-7 Stokes, who played at Prolific Prep School in Napa as a freshman and sophomore before relocating to the San Fernando Valley in the fall, is the BurlisonOnBasketball top SoCal junior for the 2024-25 season.

He heads a group of players in the region’s Class of 2026 that could prove as deep and gifted as anywhere in the country, including Jason Crowe, Jr.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
