Isaacs continues trending among 2022’s best

October 8, 2018 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – It seems like he’s always been on or around a basketball court.

For the better part of his 13 years – and he just turned 15 last month – Richard Issacs Jr. was the cool little kid who was always hanging around his dad at high school, club ball or camp games in gymnasiums in and around Las Vegas or anywhere in Southern California.

Rick Isaacs once coached a successful Los Angeles-based club program “H Squad” and since has qualified as one of the most hard-core of hoops junkies to be found from coast to coast.

Class of 2022 shows out at USA BB mini-camp

October 7, 2018 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – The members of the high school basketball Class of 2022 have yet to play a “real” high school game as of yet.

But the 30 freshmen that are part of the crew assembled for the USA Basketball mini-camp in the Olympic Training Center this weekend have shown that some impressive debuts are in store for them in a little more than a month.

It’s by far the biggest of basketball “platforms” that any of them have appeared upon and most of them have demonstrated that they’ve suffered from anything approaching “stage fright”.

Players rise to occasion to honor late hoops star

CULVER CITY, Ca. – Nine games – several of them involving some of the best teams in California – were on the menu for the second Ryse-Up Fall Classic Sunday at Culver City.

As compelling and well-played as some of those nine clashes were, notably Bishop Montgomery vs. Taft and Sierra Canyon vs. Veritas Prep, the focus of the event was to continue to celebrate very special young man who died so tragically just a day before he was to graduate from Redondo Union High in June of 2017.

Utah’s best, and more, deliver strong efforts Saturday

September 30, 2018 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

DRAPER, Utah – The Chris PoPoola-fronted EAT Utah Camp was held Saturday at the APA Center in this suburb of Salt Lake City, with 80 or so players in attendance and each playing twice a day.

It offered an insightful look into the present state of the best high school players in Utah while also providing an in-depth opportunity to see the future of the state’s best prospects.

And there were also a handful of top-quality players from outside of Utah who stood out in their two games apiece, too.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
