COLORADO SPRINGS – Eighty-plus players (88 were invited; several didn’t play) were on display over three days and five practice sessions during the USA Basketball’s “mini-camp” this past weekend in the US Olympic Training Center.

What follows are my choices as the 15 athletes that most impressed me with the way they played when I watched them over the weekend. The choices are not tied into college or NBA “upside/or potential”.

If you wonder where a bunch of well-known names aren’t listed, Vernon Carey, Jalen Green, and James Wiseman, being prime examples, it’s because I only considered players who were in action the entire weekend and didn’t pack it up early with assorted ailment.

RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA – Nick Davidson, a 6-foot-8 sophomore and a projected starter for the Santa Margarita High basketball team this season, has checked out of school and is expected to enroll at Mater Dei, Eagles Coach Jeff Reinert said Tuesday.

“His dad (Kirk Davidson, at the time, an assistant at SM) came to practice yesterday (Monday) at 4 o’clock and told me he was taking Nick out of school and going to enroll him at Mater Dei,” Reinert said.

I couldn’t reach Mater Dei Coach Gary McKnight by telephone Tuesday afternoon for comment.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – It seems like he’s always been on or around a basketball court.

For the better part of his 13 years – and he just turned 15 last month – Richard Issacs Jr. was the cool little kid who was always hanging around his dad at high school, club ball or camp games in gymnasiums in and around Las Vegas or anywhere in Southern California.

Rick Isaacs once coached a successful Los Angeles-based club program “H Squad” and since has qualified as one of the most hard-core of hoops junkies to be found from coast to coast.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Co. – The members of the high school basketball Class of 2022 have yet to play a “real” high school game as of yet.

But the 30 freshmen that are part of the crew assembled for the USA Basketball mini-camp in the Olympic Training Center this weekend have shown that some impressive debuts are in store for them in a little more than a month.

It’s by far the biggest of basketball “platforms” that any of them have appeared upon and most of them have demonstrated that they’ve suffered from anything approaching “stage fright”.

COLORADO SPRINGS, Ca. – Eighty-eight players from across the country are on hand for the USA Basketball mini-camp at the USA Olympic Training Center here this weekend.

Workouts got underway – in two gymnasiums – Friday night for what could be the largest and most impressive collection of high school prospects (across all four classes) ever at any one event.

Action continues Saturday morning (MT) at 10:30, with another workout session set for 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday sessions of 9:30 a.m. and 4 p.m.
