DUNCANVILLE, TX – Texas may be smack dab in the middle of high school football season.

And, by the way, all things football – especially the high school version of the sport – are pretty big in this state.

But the two-day Stop No. 2 on the 2019 Pangos All-Regional Frosh/Soph Camps tour

got underway Saturday at the Duncanville Fieldhouse.

Some terrific Texas high school hoops, anyone?

Approximately 220 players, the overwhelming majority of them from Texas and from the high school classes of 2022 and ’23, were on hand to show why the state can go toe to toe – metaphorically and literally — with the likes of California, Illinois and Florida when it comes to high-level prep hoops.

CULVER CITY – The third Ryse-Up Fall Classic wrapped Sunday at Culver City High, with six boys’ basketball games played in honor of the late Redondo High standout, Ryse Williams.

Williams died in June of 2017, just a day before his scheduled high school graduation, of a rare form of cancer, Renal Medullary Carcinoma.

Five games were played Saturday at Fairfax High in the first day of the event, proceeds from which go the Ryse Williams Foundation.

Four strong contenders for Open Division Sectional post-season play came away with impressive victories:

ONTARIO, CA – The host Colony High team joined its counterparts from Rancho Christian, Riverside Poly, Eastvale Roosevelt and Rancho Verde in going 2-0 Saturday during the Hoops by Ugland Fall High School Showcase Saturday.

*Junior guard Brenton Knapper (pictured) scored 29 points as Colony, trailing by seven points late, edged Sonora (La Habra), 70-67, in the last of 18 games played in the event.

Freshman guard added Kylan Boswell added 17 for Colony while sophomore forward Marqui Worthy led Sonora with 25 and junior guard Daniel Esparza (who scored 27 points a few hours earlier in his team’s 69-49 loss to Riverside Poly) chipped in with 16.

LOS ANGELES – Many of the elite boys’ basketball programs in Southern California are set to participate in the third Ryse-Up Fall Classic that will get underway Saturday at Fairfax High, and then conclude Sunday at Culver City High.

Eleven games over the two days are scheduled to be played to honor the memory of the late basketball standout, Ryse Williams, and to raise funds for the charitable foundation formed in his name.

Williams, a two-time, all-Southern Section selection who had planned attend and play basketball for Loyola Marymount University, died in late spring of 2017 – just a day before his scheduled Redondo High School graduation ceremony – of Renal Medullary Carcinoma (RMC), a rare form of cancer.

ONTARIO, Ca. – The first Hoops by Ugland Fall High School Showcase tips off at 9 o’clock Saturday morning, with 18 games scheduled to be played in the Colony High gymnasium.

Among the teams that are set to play is Rancho Christian, led by USC-bound 7-footer Evan Mobley (pictured) who is the consensus choice as top player in the national senior class.

The Eagles of Coach Ray Barefield – strong contenders for Southern Section and State Open championships in 2020 – play one of Orange County’s strongest public-school programs, Canyon, at 12:45 p.m.
