LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – The Centennial High Huskies enter the 2022 portion of the “2021-22” boys basketball campaign the same way they started the season – atop the BurlisonOnBasketball Southern California ratings.

Coach Josh Giles’ team capped an impressive first 13 games with victories over quality opponents against No.’s 11 St. John Bosco, 15 Etiwanda and 4 Crean Lutheran to close The Classic at Damien.

The Huskies – scheduled to play host to Rancho Christian Monday night – are followed by the same eight teams that trailed them a week ago, albeit with some shifting of spots, based upon the results in The Classic.

LA VERNE, Ca. – Schedules – and opponents – were changing on the fly, via COVID issues, on Thursday’s final day of the Classic at Damien boys’ basketball tournament.

But, by the time the final game tipped off in Damien High’s Athletic Center Thursday night, California’s top team – the Corona Centennial Huskies – faced another tough challenge for the third night in a row.

LA VERNE, Ca. – A couple of programs from Riverside County that last hooked up three years ago, run into each again Thursday night for the championship in the Platinum Division of The Classic at Damien.

The Corona Centennial High Huskies, absorbing and deflecting a lot of metaphorical “punches” from a dialed in Etiwanda opponent, got four points from guard Donovan Dent in the final minute to secure a 67-61 victory Wednesday night.

And, in the second semifinal, Riverside Poly built a 12-point advantage in the second quarter and – after falling behind by three points mid-way through the next quarter – turned in a strong final eight minutes to hand the host Spartans their first loss, 64-56.

LA VERNE, Ca. – The best high school boys’ basketball team in the west, along with the host school’s unbeaten squad, had narrow escapes Tuesday night to advance to the championships in the Platinum Division of The Classic at Damien.

*Top-ranked Corona Centennial trailed much of the way against a relentless Bellflower St. John Bosco club before going ahead to stay on a nifty penetration and dish by guard Jared McCain that led to a dunk by 6-foot-10, fellow junior Devin Williams with 52 seconds remaining.

LA VERNE, Ca. – Two of Southern Section’s better boys’ high school basketball teams were moved to the left side of the Platinum Bracket by programs from Idaho and Utah Monday during the first day of The Classic at Damien.

They were “upsets” only if you didn’t know much about the Meridian (ID) Owyhee and American Fork (UT) teams before they took to Damien’s Athletic Center floor for their games against Playa del Rey St. Bernard and Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, respectively, Monday.

But the squad from Idaho – playing for a school in its first academic year of existence – turned in an overwhelming fourth quarter, coming from four points down with about four minutes to go, and came away with a 66-54 victory over a St.
