February 1, 2025 By Frank Burlison 251 Comments

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – The Santa Margarita High boys’ basketball team wrapped a terrific week Friday.

And, with the 65-60 Trinity League win at JSerra, the Eagles are in position to win no worse than a share of the league crown with two victories to close out the regular season next week.

Coach Justin Bell’s team trailed by 14 points (40-26) midway through the third quarter before junior Kaiden Bailey fueled a collective effort at both ends of the floor to come away with its second win against one of state’s top teams in this week.

Eagles flock to road for Trinity League stunner Monday night

January 28, 2025 By Frank Burlison 3 Comments

BELLFLOWER – The boys CIF Southern Section Open Division playoffs are set to begin officially on the evening of Feb.14.

When the CIF Southern Section’s playoff computer ratings were updated on Monday afternoon, four members apiece from the Trinity and Mission leagues were among the first 13 in the pecking order.

So, it seems fair to suggest that they’re going on unofficially every time a Mission or Trinity league game is played.

One of those Open qualifying games was played Monday night at St. John Bosco High.

LAGUNA NIGUEL – And we’re down to the last two weeks of the regular season . . .

*As was the theme of last week’s SoCal Top 30 teams rating update, it’s all about what happens in Mission and Trinity League showdowns this week.

The results of those games will continue to shape the look of the CIF Southern Section’ s eight-team Open Division playoff field and help determine which of those two mega-leagues clubs will also challenge for a Division I title.

The first of those clashes is set for Monday night (7 o’clock), when No.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
