Ron Massey Memorial was nice “primer” for 2023-24 prep hoops

LONG BEACH — The “championship” game of the Elite 8 bracket of the Ron Massey Memorial Fall Hoops Classic was more than just a tad anticlimactic.

But, even as Southern California powers Corona Centennial and St. John Bosco played with nary a usual starter on the floor in the event finale Sunday afternoon at McBride High, the cumulative takeaway from the 36 games played over the two days was an insightful one.

Centennial’s 62-48 win over the Braves came minus the starting lineup that propelled it to first- and second-round wins over Crean Lutheran (67-40, Saturday night) and Santa Maria St.

September 7, 2023 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LAGUNA NIGUEL — Barely a few weeks following the wrap of the summer portion of the of the high school basketball “season” that never ends, “fall” competition is upon us not quite 2 ½ months before the start of the “real” season.

The annual Ron Massey Memorial Falls Hoops Classic tips things off in nifty fashion Saturday at McBride High in Long Beach.

The Pangos Elite 8 bracket is made up a field that includes seven programs that are in my post-Summer Southern California ratings, as well as the program (St.

WALNUT CREEK, Ca. — The squad wearing white jerseys prevailed, 88-66, over its black-wearing counterpart Sunday afternoon in the Top 20 All-Star game, putting a nifty bow on things while wrapping a successful first-ever Pro-West Exposures Camp at Tice Valley Community College.

The camp, organized and hosted by the Hoops Executive group, provided a showcase for approximately 110 boys’ high school players across the four classes (with one eighth grader).

It has a chance to join Gerry Freitas’ NorCal Tip-Off (the 16th version is set for Nov.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
