Cali’s “Big 2” come through in big way Saturday night

December 3, 2023 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Four of the top seven boys’ basketball teams from Southern California tested themselves against some exceptional opponents during Saturday’s final day of the HoopHall West at Chaparral High.

And No.’s 1 and 2 — who hold that status from border to border in California — held up quite well, indeed.

Top-ranked (via the BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Top 30) Studio City Harvard-Westlake was down by 13 points early in the second quarter of its final-game clash with Perry of Gilbert, the two-time defending, top-division state champion in Arizona.

Stepinac — at the buzzer — in HoopHall clash Friday

December 2, 2023 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — He and his teammates were making their season debut Friday night at Chapparal High against significant competition as part of the HoopHall West.

But, after 32 minutes of game time against the best team — and player — in Arizona, guard Boogie Fland and his Archbishop Stepinac buddies (by way of White Plains in New York) proved every bit as good as their preseason hype declared they are.

Fland, who signed a National Letter of Intent with the University of Kentucky last month, took an inbound pass with seven seconds to go and, a big stride beyond mid court, drilled a pass to the left wing and into the “shooting pocket” of sophomore Danny Carbuccia, a foot or so behind the 3-point arc.

HoopHall West action sizzles Thursday in Scottsdale

December 1, 2023 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

SCOTTSDALE, AZ — A couple of down-to-the-wire clashes — aka, “overtime” — between some of the elite boys basketball teams in Arizona highlighted the four-game action during the HoopHall West Thursday evening at Chapparal High.

The event continues at Chapparal Friday, with prep school matchups at 4 p.m. MT (Veritas Prep of Southern California vs. Chandler, AZ, Canyon International) and 5:30 (Wasatch Academy of Utah vs. Chandler Compass Prep).

“Traditional high school” teams follow at 7 (and high school action following at 7 (two-time Arizona champion Glendale Perry vs.

A whole lot of hoops played in 5 games at Redondo

November 29, 2023 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

REDONDO BEACH — Three of the five games played during Tuesday’s long first day of the 72nd Ryse Williams/Pacific Shores event at Redondo Union High needed a collective five overtimes to determine winners.

Not surprisingly, Harvard-Westlake wasn’t one of those basketball teams needing extra time to bag its fifth win in as many tries.

Coach David Rebibo’s defending state Open Division champion got all but 10 of its points from its “Big Three” of seniors Trent Perry (30) and Robert Hinton (23), and junior Nikolas Khamenia (20), to keep a gritty La Mirada squad at bay, 83-68, in what qualified as the first “competitive” contest the Wolverines had been involved with in a season just into its 16th day Tuesday.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
