Crespi, Redondo with wins vs. non-CIF SS foes Saturday

January 4, 2026 By Frank Burlison 7 Comments

NEWPORT BEACH – Two CIF Southern Section programs, a couple of Las Vegas-based squads, two teams from Bakersfield and one of the traditional Northern California-based powers set the table for the BSN Sports Showcase’s three games at Pacifica Christian High Saturday.

Crespi, in its final pre-Mission League tuneup, pulled away in the third quarter and knocked off Modesto Christian, 60-49, in the event’s final game.

Six players scored from five to 12 points for the Celts (13-6), juniors Isaiah Barnes and Rodney Mukendi leading the way.

Much-improved Servite battles St. Francis Saturday

January 2, 2026 By Frank Burlison 6 Comments

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO, Ca. – The first two games played Friday at JSerra in the opening day of the OC2LC Showcase set the stage for should be a terrific boys’ basketball matchup on Saturday’s Day II at St. Francis in La Canada.

After St. Francis opened with an as-anticipated “reasonably comfortable” win over Fairfax, 58-41, the Servite Friars pulled off a 76-72 upset of Rolling Hills Prep.

That means that Saturday night’s 7:30 clash between the representatives of the Trinity and Mission Leagues – with the game played on the Mission squad’s home court – will mean even more than had been anticipated relative to the CIF Southern Section computer ratings.

Nine title games put a wrap on ninth Classic at Damien

December 31, 2025 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

LA VERNE, CA – Point guard Delton Prescott and center Darius Wabbington made a profound on-court statement Tuesday night to wrap up a Classic at Damien presentation in strong support that they’re as good as any players at their positions in the western junior class.

The Phoenix Sunnyslope High tandem help their team turn in a strong second-half performance as the 13-1 Vikings – “avenging” their only loss of the season – toppled Redondo Union, 71-63, in the championship game of the Platinum in the 9th edition of the most prestigious post-Christmas boys’ basketball tournament in the west.

Nine title games on the line Tuesday at Damien High

December 30, 2025 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

LA VERNE, CA – The semifinalists in the Platinum and Gold Divisions rolled into Tuesday night’s championship games of the Classic at Damien.

But one of the Diamond Division semifinal winners needed more late-game heroics from a sophomore whose family has quite the history in this event to get into its title game in Damien’s Athletic Center Tuesday afternoon.

Redondo Union and Phoenix Sunnyslope – after 79-55 and 65-48 victories over Crean Lutheran and Crespi, respectively, Monday night – hook up in the 8:30 p.m. title game to wrap up the ninth edition of the most prestigious post-Christmas boys’ high school basketball tournament in the region.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
