Monday night SLO action

December 20, 2011 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

SAN LUIS OBISPO, CA – Anyone willing to invest 12 hours of his or her life in the Mission Prep gymnasium Monday was treated to eight nifty high school basketball games in return.

And the semifinal action in the National and Elite divisions of the school’s annual Christmas Classic produced the participants in what should be a couple of terrific championship games on Tuesday evening.

The host school’s team – led by forward Zach Allmon, one of California’s most underrated players – will take on Cypress Bay (from Weston, Fla.)

On the Clippers-Hornets trade

December 14, 2011 By Frank Burlison 4 Comments

Time, of course, will tell – as in do Eric Gordon and Chris Paul sign contract extensions with their new teams, and stay relative healthy – but the Clippers-Hornets trade has the potential to be of the “win-win” variety for both organizations.

Make no mistake about it: The Clippers gave up almost all most all of the commodities they have so patiently accumulated over the past few years under Neil Olshey (Vice President of Basketball Operations) and Andy Roeser (the franchise’s president).

*The Hornets pick up a former all-star in Chris Kaman – if healthy, one of the half dozen or so “true centers” in the sport – as well as the expiring contract of nearly $13 million he brings along.

Westchester and Santa Monica . . . prep hot spots

December 9, 2011 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

Two of the very best high school hoops tournaments in California are taking place within a few miles of one another right now.

The Trevor Ariza Tip-Off Classic, hosted by Westchester High (7400 West Manchester), and “The Tournament”, hosted by Santa Monica High (601 Pico), hold their semifinals Friday evening.

At Westchester, the championship semifinals feature the host Comets against Gardena Serra at 7 o’clock followed by L.A. Washington and Torrance Bishop Montgomery at 8:30.

At Santa Monica, the semifinals get underway at 6:30 with Mission Hills Alemany against L.A.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
