  LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA – The rosters for the 35^th McDonald’s All-American Boys Basketball game were unveiled Thursday afternoon.

No doubt that there were 24 players – and their family, coaches and friends – who were delighted at the 24 selections.

Needless to add, there were many times that number of players – and their family, coaches and friends – who were bitterly disappointed when the team members were announced.

But, like so many other ventures in life, selecting the McDonald’s All-American team is anything but an exact science.

SANTA ANA, CA – One of the most tantalizing boys’ hoops events annually – the Nike Extravaganza, hosted by Mater Dei High – is on tap with some of the best teams and players in the West and beyond this weekend.

Tipping things off is a Friday night (7:30 PT) clash between a couple of Trinity League opponents – the host Mater Dei Monarchs and the Bellflower St. John Bosco Braves.

The Monarchs of Coach Gary McKnight are the top-ranked club in California and will take 20-2 (overall) and 7-0 (Trinity League) records into the game against the Braves of Coach Derrick Taylor (17-5 and 6-1).

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA – The pairings for the 10^th BracketBusters were unveiled Monday evening and there were some intriguing – and potentially entertaining – matchups indeed.

Ultimately, I’m not sure how much any of those matchups will impact the at-large selections and seeding for the NCAA Tournament field of 68 when the bracket is unveiled on the evening of March 11.

But they should be enjoyable to watch, with some having a sort of “NCAA Tourney feel” to them.

*Murray State is the last of the unbeatens but the Racers will face their biggest challenge so far with their BB showdown with Saint Mary’s (Feb.

LOS ANGELES – Highlighting the prep hoops action in Southern California this weekend is the fourth annual “Fairfax State Preview” – hosted by, logically, Fairfax High on Saturday.

The action gets underway at 10:30 a.m., with La Canada taking on El Camino of Oceanside.
