Patson Siame Commits to Loyola Marymount

Patson Siame

By JAMES KERTI

Six-foot-eleven Patson Siame committed to Loyola Marymount this week.

The Impact Basketball Academy center, who hails from Zambia, has showed off his skills recently in the Nevada Basketball Development League in Las Vegas.

I’ve had the opportunity to watch him play there, so I’ll break down his game a bit.

Siame uses his combination of height and athleticism to block shots and dunk relentlessly. He has an impressive motor and runs well.

Though raw, he’s demonstrated a good feel for the game. He’s a willing screener in the pick-and-roll and blocks shots on the weak side without compromising the team’s defense.

Wrapping up the regionals

March 26, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

The second half of the Final Four field was filled Sunday in not totally unexpected fashions.

*The Kentucky Wildcats are far and away the favorites to win the national title on April 2.

As if more proof was needed, Coach John Calipari’s squad deliveredit  in forceful fashion, 82-70.

If only the outcome of that South Regional final in Atlanta was as in doubt as the final margin might suggest.

The Wildcats led by 20 points by intermission and should be given major props for not getting disinterested and snapping on Final Four caps with 10 minutes to go.

And then there were six . . .

Unless you are a fan of the Syracuse or Florida – or both – teams, there isn’t much to gripe about regarding what went on during the two NCAA Tournament regional finals played Saturday.

And the Ohio State and Louisville now make up half the Final Four field that will be on hand in New Orleans next weekend – and both the Buckeyes and Cardinals had to call on the figurative shovels and dig hard to get there Saturday.

The Louisville Cardinals got there by way of a 72-68 win over the Florida Gators.

And then there were eight . . .

Friday we found out that . . .

*The North Carolina Tar Heels could survive with point guard Kendall Marshall in street clothes . . .

*Kansas could hang on and advance while hitting 55 percent of its free throws and knocking in just one more 3-pointer than I converted against North Carolina State . . .

*Kentucky could take one more step toward what many believe is the inevitable – picking up national championship hardware in New Orleans on late-night April 2 . . .

A look at Friday’s games

FRIDAY’S REGIONAL SEMIFINALS

SOUTH/At Atlanta

No. 3 Baylor vs. No. 10 Xavier (7:15 p.m. ET/CBS)

Frank Says: Each of these teams had stretches in which it would have been dicey to project Sweet 16 appearances for either. The Musketeers appear to be playing at “pre-brawl (with Cincinnati) form. And the Bears are now look the part of a team two wins away from a Final Four appearance – in large part because of Southern Idaho transfer point guard Pierre Jackson. To earn a spot in Sunday’s regional final, however, Baylor is going to need a big effort out of Perry Jones III (four of 14 from field/nine points/14 rebounds in two NCAA games) against Xavier’s Kenny Frease (35 points/15 rebounds in same stretch).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
