Looking back at April’s standout performers

May 8, 2012 By James Kerti 297 Comments

By JAMES KERTI

I had the opportunity to attend the Pangos Spring Spectacular and the adidas VIP Exclusive Run in Las Vegas over the weekend of April 20-22 as well as the Real Deal in the Rock tournament in Little Rock from April 27-29.

While the following players aren’t necessarily the best prospects in the events, they are among those who stood out the most for me.

* Kasey Hill (6-1/Florida Rams/Montverde Academy/ FL/2013)

James Says: He’s the best point guard prospect that I’ve seen in his class.

McLaughlin dazzles in desert

May 1, 2012 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA – I spent about 27 hours over Friday and Saturday in Las Vegas, most of that stint coming in the Bishop Gorman High gymnasium.

For that I thank my wife, Julie, who kindly offered up a roundtrip Southwest ticket Thursday night and the opportunity to catch a hunk of the Best Buy Basketball Challenge Series/Spring Classic.

I owe you, big-time, baby. But then again you already know that . . .

Here are 10 of the better prospects I watched, listed alphabetically:

*Casey Benson (6-1/16U Arizona Magic Pump N Run/Tempe, AZ, Corona Del Sol)

Frank Says: Here is just another example of why the western Class of 2014 is chock full of quality point-guard prospects.

Burly’s prep All-American picks

April 27, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA – Well, there wasn’t much mystery about who was going to be the national high school Player of the Year.

Shabazz Muhammad was the front-runner going into his senior season, and remained in that position after leading Las Vegas Bishop Gorman to a Nevada state title.

And then Muhammad proceeded to trample whatever competition existed by returning from Chicago (McDonald’s All-American Game), Portland (Nike Hoop Summit) and Charlotte (Jordan Brand Classic) with Most Outstanding Player hardware.

Muhammad is joined on the BurlisonOnBasketball Senior All-American first team by a future UCLA teammate (Kyle Anderson), a soon-to-be shot-blocking specialist for Kentucky (Nerlens Noel) and a couple of guards headed to the ACC (Rodney Purvis) and Big 12 (Marcus Smart), respectively.

Florida guard, L.V. center among weekend standouts

April 24, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

By FRANK BURLISON

LAS VEGAS, NV – Multiple trips on the 215 Highway between Bishop Gorman and the Foothill and Green Valley high school campuses last weekend provided a nifty hoops-viewing opportunity for yours truly.

Bishop Gorman was the host of the first Pangos Spring Spectacular while the latter two sites were where the bulk of the contests for the adidas VIP Executive Run were held.

Play Hard/Play Smart of Sacramento (over the Albuquerque-based Danny Granger D1 Ambassadors) and the Florida Rams (over Garner Elite of North Carolina) were the champions of the top divisions of Pangos and adidas, respectively.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
