Hoopin’ along the SoCal coast

June 24, 2012 By Frank Burlison 36 Comments

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – I can’t believe the third weekend of June 2012 is just about a wrap.

As a wise man (or woman) once suggested, “Gee, time sure flies, doesn’t it?”

Here is a rundown on my basketball-watching activities over Saturday and Sunday . . .

I casually cruised up the 73 Toll Road Saturday morning to Newport Beach to check out the action in the Corona del Mar Sea Kings Shootout.

The Las Vegas Bishop Gorman Gaels were the headline act – or would have been back in the days when there were a lot of daily newspapers and they had the space/manpower to devote to a high-profile summer hoops event.

NBA Players Association Camp is a wrap

June 17, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The class members of the 19th NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp were subject to a “jury by their peers”, in a manner of speaking, Saturday evening at the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena,

The approximately 100 players who were part of the camp cast “ballots”, of sort, for an “all-camp” team.

Centers got to vote for a center, forwards got their pick as the two-best at their position in the camp while guards also got to put “X’s” next to the names of who they believe were the two best at the position over the four days of drills, practices and games.

Lil’ fellas get big results/responses at Top 100 Camp

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Two sub-six-footers continued their sparkling play Friday night while an Indiana University-bound recruit turned in the most substantial scoring effort of the 19th NBA Player Association Top 100 Camp’s first four rounds of games.

Six-foot-four Stanford Robinson (Alexandria, VA, St. Paul VI), who was such a standout for Team Takeover during the last session the Nike EYBL on Memorial Day Weekend, turned in a camp-high 24 points late Thursday night for the Grizzlies against the Celtics in the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena.

Getting right to the point at NBA Top 100 Camp

June 15, 2012 By Frank Burlison 4 Comments

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The media-types were in the standings and the games tipped off Thursday morning.

And a pretty nifty Day 2 it was for the 19th NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp at the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena.

One of the first three games that got underway at 10:45 was played on Court 1, and featured two of the consensus Top 5 players in the national class of 2013.

And, naturally, most eyes in the building zeroed in on Andrew Harrison (Richmond, TX, Ft.

Alexander, Harrison among NBA Top 100 standouts

June 14, 2012 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Wednesday’s Day 1 of the 19th NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp was all about players and coaches checking in, slapping on Under Armour shoes and clothing and being briefed on the rules and parameters of the four-day event at the University of Virginia’s John Paul Jones Arena.

Of course – although there were no games, per se, played – the players also had an opportunity to put the skills that got them invited to the camp on display.

The players, broken up into 10 teams, rotated through 10 stations (half-courts) for about three and a half hours of drill work before the teams spent about an hour’s worth of orientation on preparation for the start of games (Thursday morning).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
