Oodles of standouts at Frosh/Soph event in SoCal

September 30, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

CORONA, CA – There was no shortage of “point guard-types” on hand at the Players Edge facility Saturday during the Fullcourt Press All-Frosh/Soph Camp.

Come to think of it . . . there were plenty of impressive post players – and wings – as well.

Sedrick Barefield (Corona, CA/Centennial), Kahill Simplis (North Hollywood Campbell Hall) and Kendall Small (Huntington Beach, CA/Ocean View) came into the two-day event with already well-established reputations for being among the West’s best at point guard in the Class of 2015.

Each of the three Southern California residents more than played justified the hyperbole with his play Saturday afternoon and evening in his two games.

Burly’s spring/summer selections . . . finally

September 27, 2012 By Frank Burlison 143 Comments

LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA – The gestation period for assembling the thing was seemingly longer than that of an elephant.

But, finally, here it is: My 2012 all-Spring and Summer Honor Squad.

From among these teams – first- and second-10 in the Class of 2013, as well as “others” in the class (players who are still underrated in many circles); a top 10 for 2014; and a top Five for 2015 – come most of the usual suspects.

And there are some not-quite-so-familiar names to be found, as usual.

Bishop Gorman and Findlay Prep players on display

September 26, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LAS VEGAS, NV – The annual Fullcourt Press Las Vegas Fall Showcase was held at Bishop Gorman High Tuesday.

And, not surprisingly, event was highlighted in large part by the presence of players from the host school and national prep school-power Findlay Prep of nearby Henderson.

The all-sophomore frontcourt of Stephen Zimmerman (6-foot-10), Chase Jeter (6-8) and Nick Blair (6-4) of Gorman were dominant while playing in both the sophomore and junior games.

The left-handed Zimmerman, still working his way back into top-flight playing condition after June surgery on his right knee forced him to spend summer watching instead of playing games, showed off his remarkable versatility.

Lots of hoops standouts in E.A.T. Utah Showcase

September 22, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah — The first-ever E.A.T. (Elite Athletic Training) Utah Showcase demonstrated oh-so-succinctly Saturday why there should definitely be a second-ever Utah Showcase a year from now.

Many of the state’s top players – from eighth to 12th grades – were on display during the five games that were played in the spacious and spiffy West High gymnasium.

The action wrapped up early Saturday evening when the Red squad – led by forward Jalen Moore of Sky View High in Salt Lake City – held off the White, 62-58, in the game for members of the Class of 2013.

Poly proves too much for Bishop Gorman

September 17, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

LYNWOOD, CA – A rule of thumb when it comes to high school basketball:

Very good seniors are going to beat very good sophomores pretty much every time – especially when there is a nifty junior tossed into the mix for the seniors.

That was the case Sunday afternoon at Lynwood High when Long Beach Poly – paced by the senior duo of Roschon Prince and Jordan Bell and multi-skilled junior Kameron Chatman – jumped out to a rapid-fire advantage and then coasted to a 73-47 victory over Las Vegas Bishop Gorman in the championship game of the 20th Fullcourt Press Fall Hoops Classic.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
