Poly and Alemany in a to-the-wire Fairfax finish

June 26, 2013 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

LOS ANGELES – All in all, I’d consider Day II of the 27th Nike Fairfax Summer Classic a “bookends” sort-of deal.

Games II&III on Tuesday were – and there is no other way to put this politely – “lopsided” affairs.

But the contests that began – and ended – the second day of competition during the six-day event were nothing short of entertaining.

First up, the games whose outcomes were achieved without much in the way of muss or fuss:

*The host Lions, minus Head Coach Harvey Kitani (he’s working Chris Paul’s camp), rolled past La Canada, 66-49.

Just The Fax: Four entertaining games open tourney

June 25, 2013 By Frank Burlison 11 Comments

LOS ANGELES — The Nike-Fairfax High Summer Classic may not quite have lived up to the latter part of its name on the opening of the 27th version of the event Monday night.

But, all in all, one would be hard-pressed to find high school hoops games as entertaining – and as relatively well-played – in the summer as were the four contests played three weeks and two days into June.

Three squads that could go into next season ranked about the five best in the CIF Southern Section joined the Woodland Hills El Camino Real Conquistadors (with four starters on hand from the club that lost to Westchester in the L.A.

Smart decision not all that agonizing for Marcus

June 19, 2013 By Frank Burlison 5 Comments

COLORADO SPRINGS – Aaron Gordon and Billy Donovan had reactions unlike the majority of those who follow college basketball did immediately after it was reported on April 16 that Marcus Smart was going to play a sophomore season at Oklahoma State.

The wide-spread assumption was that the 6-foot-4, 220-pound point guard, after earning Big 12 Conference Player of the Year and All-American honors for his fabulous freshman performance in Stillwater, was going wrap his arms around the opportunity to be among top five or so selections in the June 27 NBA Draft.

USA Under-19 squad is built to pressure folks

June 18, 2013 By Frank Burlison 164 Comments

COLORADO SPRINGS – USA Under-19 Coach Billy Donovan said Monday afternoon that he wanted to take a team to Prague that “can really pressure people all over the court, defensively.”

When USA Basketball announced the final 12-player roster Monday night after seven practices over four days, the University of Florida’s coach’s wishes appeared granted.

Five of those selections – guards Marcus Smart (Oklahoma State) and Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke), as well as frontcourt players Jarnell Stokes (Tennessee), Jerami Grant (Syracuse) and Montrezl Harrell (Louisville) – played for Donovan during the USA Under-18 squad run to gold during the 2012 FIBA Championships last June in Brazil.

Philly PG leads “Celtics” to NBAPA Top 100 Camp title

June 16, 2013 By Frank Burlison 14 Comments

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The 20th NBA Players Association Top 100 Camp’s competition  wrapped up Saturday evening with a championship game between the teams that had rolled to semifinal victories a couple of hours earlier.

And, ultimately, it was the Celtics that did the rolling in the finale, cruising past the Mavericks, 81-67, in the John Paul Jones Arena on the University of Virginia campus.

Ja’Quan Newton, a 6-foot-2 senior-to-be at Philadelphia’s Neumann-Goretti High, scored a camp-best 32 points – often while another top 2014 PG, Josh Perkins (from Aurora in Colorado but bound for Huntington Prep in West Virginia), was attempting to defend him – to lead the Celtics, who wrapped up their competition 7 and zip.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
