Frosh/Soph Camp’s best came by way of Saginaw

October 20, 2013 By Frank Burlison 19 Comments

LAGRANGE, IL – Day I of the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp is a wrap.

And consider this:

If freshman Brian Bowen (Saginaw, MI, Hill) has an encore on tap that is anything approaching his opening act on Saturday, there are going to be a whole lot of bedazzled onlookers Sunday at the Park District Recreation Center in this Chicago suburb.

Saturday the slender 6-foot-6 Bowen – who turned down the opportunity to visit Lexington Friday night for Kentucky’s Midnight Madness in order to play at this camp – put on a compelling on-court demonstration as to why his name belongs prominently in any discussion about the best of the best in the Class of 2017 when it comes to high school hoops.

All-South Camp has quite the spectacular wrapup

October 13, 2013 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

LEWISVILLE, TX – The second annual Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp, held at the Metropolitan Athletic Center (MAC) in this suburban-Dallas town, wrapped up late Sunday afternoon the way it began early Saturday afternoon:

Some tall 10th and ninth-graders showed off the kind of skills that should eventually make them among the most heavily recruited prospects in the country.

But there were plenty of “small” (relatively speaking, of course) to “mid-sized” players who demonstrated why there will be plenty of elite-level college programs in pursuit of them over the next few years, as well.

Texans among All-Frosh/Soph Camp standouts

October 13, 2013 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

LEWISVILLE, TX – One thing that was almost immediately quite obvious about the second annual Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp Saturday at the Metro Athletic Center (MAC):

There was no shortage of very tall young men on hand and all of them appeared quite anxious to show how much skill and effort came along with that impressive size.

Among the best of the big fellows were a couple of non-U.S. citizens who are sure to have a lot of U.S. institutions of higher learning – academic and the kind acquired in arenas and gymnasiums – in pursuit of them before too long.

Sophomores shine at San Diego Super 80 Showcase

October 6, 2013 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

OCEANSIDE, Ca. – An extraordinary sophomore class demonstrated why it is all of that – and maybe more – Saturday at Mira Costa Community College during the San Diego Super 80 Showcase.

About 70 players got in two games apiece, with seven games played during the event that was put on so ably by Charlie Mercado of San Diego’s Gamepoint Basketball and Chad Groth of  Arizona-based Area Codes Basketball.

Six-foot-three wing Brandon Cyrus (Torrey Pines), 6-7 post Tim Harrison (Parker) and 6-0 point guard Eric Monroe (St.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
