LOS ANGELES – The second annual Take Flight Challenge, presented by Redondo Union High, proved a veritable smorgasbord for the high school basketball connoisseurs who made their way into the Jordan Hangar for 12 hours or so Saturday.

There were seven games and among the highlights were:

*A remarkable comeback in Game 1, during which the Compton High Tarbabes overcome double-digit deficits in the second half to edge Lawndale, 54-52, behind the drive, finish “And 1” by senior Robert Lewis with 11.9 seconds remaining;

*A strong performance by USC-bound forward Bennie Boatwright, who scored 20 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked a couple of shots to lead Sun Valley Village Christian to a 54-42 victory over Santa Monica;

*The terrific outside shooting of junior Jacob Davison (18 points, including three of four shots from behind the arc) to go along with the strong post punch of Gligorije Rakocevic and Balsa Dragovic as Montebello Cantwell Sacred-Heart held off short-handed L.A.

LOS ANGELES – Day II of the second annual Take Flight Challenge, presented by Redondo Union High School, tips off at 11:30 Saturday morning in The Jordan Hangar.

Six high school games are set to be played, with things schedule to be concluded with a 9 o’clock clash between prep school teams from Canada (Orangeville Prep) and San Diego (Balboa Prep).

The respective prep school squads are led by 7-foot junior Thon Maker and 6-10 sophomore DeAndre Ayton, respectively.

Maker didn’t play in his team’s game with Carson’s Future Prep Friday night.

LONG BEACH, CA – The first-ever Ron Massey Tip-Off Classic will offer a package of six high school hoops games, beginning at 11 a.m. at Jordan High on Saturday.

The first game pits Long Beach Cabrillo against the city’s parochial high school, St. Anthony.

Action continues with Lakewood vs. Goleta Dos Pueblos (12:30 p.m.); Long Beach Wilson vs. Whittier (2); Long Beach Rancho Dominguez vs. Rancho Cucamonga (3:30); Long Beach Jordan vs. Palos Verdes Peninsula (5); and Temecula Valley vs. Orange Lutheran (6:30).

General admission seating goes for $8.

LOS ANGELES – The second annual Take Flight Challenge, presented by Redondo Union High and hosted by The Jordan Hangar, is set to tip off its 10-game, two-day schedule Friday evening at 5:30.

Eight of the games involve 16 of Southern California’s better high school squad, beginning with the 5:30 Friday contest between Anaheim Canyon and Los Angeles Brentwood and wrapping with the 7:30 Saturday night game between the Redondo Sea Hawks and Torrance Bishop Montgomery Knights.

Two games pitting “prep school” teams will be played over the two days as well, too, with Ontario (CAN) Orangeville Prep facing L.A.

LAGUNA NIGUEL, Ca. – Chatsworth, CA, Sierra Canyon and Los Angeles Fairfax came out of the second to last day of 2014 with championships in two of the most challenge post-Christmas high school tournaments in the country.

Sierra Canyon used two free throws by junior point guard Devearl Ramsey with eight-tenths of a second remaining to edge Mableton, GA, Pebblebrook, 67-66, in the finale of the Open Division of the MaxPreps Holiday Classic at Rancho Mirage.

And Fairfax got 20 points from reserve Lorne Currie and used a 14-0 run in the second half to overcome a seven-point deficit in the third quarter and knocked off Redondo Beach Redondo, 56-51, in the National Division finale of the Under Armour Holiday Classic at Torrey Pines High.
