The first look at SoCal’s best HS hoops teams for ’24-25

November 13, 2024 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LAGUNA NIGUEL – With a near mind-numbing quantity of club tournaments, regional and national camps, and spring, summer and falls leagues behind us, the start of the “real” high school boys basketball season rapidly approaches.

And, before Monday’s tip-off to the 2024-25 season is upon us, let’s look at the teams I anticipate being those with the best chances of significant regular-season and playoff success.

I capped the list of those at 70 (those I’ve seen in the spring, summer or fall, plus others that I have a reasonably good “feel” for).

Charlot and Abass bag Pangos East honors

October 27, 2024 By Frank Burlison 249 Comments

WILMINGTON, DEL – Even the chaos and comedy that permeated the Crème of the Crop, Top 30 All-Star Game that wrapped up the event Sunday afternoon couldn’t soil the mostly superb two days of action during the Pangos East Frosh/Soph Camp at the Nothing But Net Sports Academy.

Shortly after Ashton Graves (Washington, DC, Archbishop Carroll) hit the game-winning 3 from the left corner for the dark jerseys in the Top 30 All-Star clash, fellow sophomores Josh Charlot (Fairfield, CT, Notre Dame Prep) and Daniel Abass (Hyattsville, MD, DeMatha) were announced as the co-Most Outstanding Players in the camp.

Oodles and oodles of splendid hoops close out Border League Sunday

October 22, 2024 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

LAS VEGAS – Sunday’s final day of The Border League competition had plenty of down-to-the-wire games, as well as the usual dose of high-octane individual talent.

The last two games of the event, coming in the “Showcase” category of contests at host Coronado High in Henderson, illustrated those points succinctly.

*Utah Prep, getting 28 points from the top scorer in high school or prep school hoops (6-foot-8 senior A.J. Dybansta), built a 16-point advantage in the second half before holding off Miami Columbus and the dynamic Boozer Twins, 72-68.

LAS VEGAS – Three California-based boys’ basketball programs that will play in the Dec. 26-30 Classic at Damien will try to win divisional championships on Sunday’s final day of The Border League.

Players representing Los Alamitos, Anaheim Canyon and Clovis North earned the title slots with two wins apiece on Saturday in gymnasiums across the city.

The event is headquartered at Coronado High in Henderson.

It wraps up early Sunday evening with high-profile “national” matchups that will be televised by the ESPN networks, with Bellflower’s St.

CIF SS powerhouse squads in Border League action

October 19, 2024 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

HENDERSON, NV – Players representing the four boys’ basketball teams that could sit atop the pre-season CIF Southern Section ratings split their openers on Friday’s first day of The Border League at Coronado High.

Since the California State Federation office is playing hard (basketball)ball this fall, state section programs aren’t allowed to participate in “fall” competition under the names of their high schools.

But the players are not in “club” situations but are playing with all of their respective high school teammates and being led by their respective coaches.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
