DUBLIN – Two “North-South” showdowns ended in favor of the northern half of the state Saturday during the nine-game, 18th boys’ basketball NorCal Tip-Off Classic at Dublin High.

San Francisco Riordan – the runner-up to Brayden Burries-led Roosevelt in the State Open Division title game in Sacramento – looked every bit a strong contender to repeat as the North’s state rep next March, scoring 33 points in the first quarter en route to an 82-69 win over La Mirada in the final game of the 14 hour-schedule.

No turkeys on SoCal weekend prep hoops menu

November 28, 2025 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

“Traditionally”, the day after Thanksgiving is consumed – pun intended – by leftovers, frenetic shopping and/or staying anchored to your recliner and watching football.

But those who come to this website for sustenance – pun intended – have another perspective on “tradition”:

High school hoops, pilgrims – yeah, that will be the last of the Thanksgiving puns.

There are multiple Southern California options on Friday that carry over into Saturday.

Those in the San Fernando Valley – or willing to make a drive, to Studio City, regardless of your local in SoCal – can hit up the first Winter Showcase, hosted by Harvard-Westlake High (3700 Coldwater Canyon Ave.)

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
