Monarchs earn a Open semi on home court

February 28, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

TORRANCE – The Mater Dei High boys’ basketball team didn’t venture to Cal Baptist University in Riverside as a participant in either of the CIF Southern Section’s Open or Division I title games contested there last Saturday.

But it’s doubtful that – with, of course, the exception of Open champion Sierra Canyon, which prevailed over Gary McKnight’s crew in the Feb. 8 playoff opener – it’s doubtful that anyone is any hotter right now in the State Southern Regional playoffs than are the Monarchs.

That certainly appeared the case Wednesday night in the El Camino Community College gym, where the Monarchs got a collective five 3s from three players in the first quarter to spark a surprisingly one-sided victory over No.

Chino Hills overcomes Christopher’s 44 points

February 27, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

CHINO HILLS – When the brackets were unveiled on Sunday afternoon, it was touted as the most compelling matchup of Tuesday night’s first round of the State Southern Regional boys’ basketball playoffs – and by more than just yours truly.

And the Mayfair-Chino Hills, Division I clash proved to be just that.

The visiting Monsoons trailed by 16 points with a little less than four minutes to go, but, behind the superb performance of junior Josh Christopher, came oh-so-close to putting things into overtime before falling, 72-69.

LAGUNA NIGUEL – The State CIF Office released the boys’ basketball State Regional playoff brackets Sunday afternoon and put some nifty first-round games on the table for Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

Action in Divisions I-V (with 16-team brackets) begins Tuesday and follows on Thursday, Saturday and March 5.

The eight-team Open bracket begins Wednesday night, with semifinals on Saturday night and the final on March 5.

All championship games will be hosted by the higher remaining seed in the matchup, instead of being played in large venues (such as the Pyramid on the Long Beach State campus).

RIVERSIDE – The Sierra Canyon High boys’ basketball team took a big step Saturday night on its road to a second consecutive CIF State Open Division championship.

And the Trailblazers of Coach Andre Chevalier did it by win their first-ever Southern Section Open title.

Led by the scoring of senior guards Cassius Stanley (a game-high 29 points on 10 of 15 from the field, including three 3s, while perfect on six free throws) and Scotty Pippen Jr. (12 points, eight in the fourth quarter), they led wire-to-wire while knocking off Bishop Montgomery, 64-57, at Cal Baptist University.

February 23, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

RIVERSIDE – The Santa Margarita High boys’ basketball team finished in fourth place in the Trinity League on Jan. 30.

On Feb. 23, the Eagles finished atop the CIF Southern Section’s Division 1 playoff bracket.

The Eagles used a stunning final seven minutes – four of those in overtime – to knock off defending champion and top seed Chino Hills, 62-61, Saturday afternoon at Cal Baptist University.

Santa Margarita’s Jake Kyman put things into overtime with a 3-pointer with nine seconds to go – his only points after intermission.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
