LAS VEGAS, NV – Multiple trips on the 215 Highway between Bishop Gorman and the Foothill and Green Valley high school campuses last weekend provided a nifty hoops-viewing opportunity for yours truly.

Bishop Gorman was the host of the first Pangos Spring Spectacular while the latter two sites were where the bulk of the contests for the adidas VIP Executive Run were held.

Play Hard/Play Smart of Sacramento (over the Albuquerque-based Danny Granger D1 Ambassadors) and the Florida Rams (over Garner Elite of North Carolina) were the champions of the top divisions of Pangos and adidas, respectively.

Saturday is just another hoop day

April 22, 2012 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LAS VEGAS, NV – Day II of my Spring Las Vegas Adventure (SLVA) was so long that I’m five hours into Day II before I can even partially recount it for you.

It started at Green Valley High, where I propelled myself head first into the adidas /VIP Exclusive Run.

Among the players/teams I saw there were:

*The Florida Rams were led by two of FL’s best players – point guard Kasey Hill (Montverde Academy), power forward Chris Walker (Holmes County) – and one of the best in GA in wing Brannen Greene (Parsons).

LAS VEGAS, NV –  The was no shortage of high-profile targets for the college basketball coaches who descended upon Bishop Gorman High Friday evening for the 6 o’clock (Pacific Time) start of the NCAA’s weekend-long recruiting evaluation period.

*The Las Vegas Prospects 17-under squad opened Pangos Spring Spectacular play with a wire-to-wire victory over the Arizona Aces/Dream 17-under team.

Class of 2013 point guard Julian Jacobs (Desert Pines), who recently committed to the University of Utah, and 6-foot-3 senior swingman Sir Washington (Clark) paced their squad to a victory over the team led by impressive 6-8 post player Joe Boyd (Scottsdale Chaparral).

April 16, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

CORONA, CA – The Compton Magic program hit .500 during its championship appearances in Corona’s Players’ Edge during the Championship Series/California Sunday afternoon.

Seniors Victor Robbins (Compton) and Daviyon Draper (L.A. Locke), and junior Payton Banks (Orange Lutheran) helped propel the Compton Magic Elite to a 66-47 over Branch West Elite in the 17-under title game.

A couple of hours later 6-foot-2 Luis Medearis and several of his Downey Warren sophomore teammates led the Downey Ballhogs to a 76-69 win over the Compton Magic 16-under championship clash.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
