OT thriller, underclassmen headline Rose City 1st day

November 27, 2012 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

PASADENA, Ca. – There were a couple of wildly entertaining games and a couple of blowouts in the first day of the Pasadena High-hosted ninth Rose City Roundball Classic.

Well, .500 isn’t bad at all.

Long Beach Jordan and La Verne Lutheran (with Jordan eking out a 64-63 overtime decision) and Chino Hills and Reseda Cleveland (with Chino Hills zipping its way to a 97-79 victory) provided all of the thrills and “real-game” entertainment.

L.A. Price (91-57 over Ventura) and the host Bulldogs (72-29 over Canoga Park AGBU) overwhelmed vastly overmatched opponents to advance to Wednesday evening championship quarterfinal contests.

61st Pac Shores among first-week prep headliners

November 26, 2012 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

The 2012-13 Southern California high school hoops season gets underway in earnest with the usual litany of top-flight tournaments this week.

My travel plans will take me to at least four of those this week (six days, beginning tonight), where I will see a large number of the best teams AND players in the Southland.

Those include the 61st Pacific Shores Tournament (at Redondo Union High); the 9th Rose City Roundball Classic (at Pasadena High); the Diablo Inferno (at Mission Viejo High); and the inaugural “Tip-Off at the Empire” (held on both the Corona Centennial and Etiwanda campuses).

Cal repped the Pac 12 very well over the long weekend

November 26, 2012 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

ANAHEIM, Ca. – Less than an hour or so later, 40 minutes or so west, a couple of Pacific 12 Conference programs suffered losses on their home courts.

But, during the championship game of the DirecTV Classic, another team representing the conference took care of business in most efficient fashion.

Coach Mike Montgomery’s California Golden Bears played a mostly outstanding 40 minutes while improving to 6-0 with their 78-58 victory over the Pacific Tigers of the Big West Conference.

The Tigers were outstanding while upsetting first Xavier (70-67) and then Saint Mary’s (76-66) in the first two rounds of the eight-team tournament.

A dandy start to boys hoop season in NorCal

November 25, 2012 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

NEWARK, Ca. – Those who hung out in the Newark Memorial High gymnasium for nearly 12 hours on Saturday were paid off over the final 2 ½ of those, big time, for the effort spent.

And it’s difficult to imagine a more scintillating beginning to a high school basketball season than was offered up by the sixth NorCal TipOff Classic.

Event CEO Gerry Freitas knew he had assembled a nifty seven-game field for the annual event which serves as a proper way to get the hoops season – boys’ style – off and running in the Bay Area.

Global Sports event a Classic

November 24, 2012 By Frank Burlison 5 Comments

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Friday night’s games in the Global Sports Classic in the Thomas & Mack Center provided more than enough post-Thanksgiving hoops action for those looking to recover from turkey comas.

And, although the major of the 16,000-plus in attendance headed home disappointed, the capper to the even – Oregon’s 83-79 upset of host UNLV – was as entertaining a game as can be hoped for in November.

The 40 minutes of action demonstrated plenty to leave both head coaches pleased about what is in store for their clubs – even if one of them had to endure his first loss of the season.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
