Bassey, Thomas, Marshall among Pangos standouts

October 11, 2015 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LEWISVILLE, Texas – It didn’t take long on Saturday to grasp that event founder and director Dinos Trigonis had assembled another strong group of players for his Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp at the MAC Center in this Dallas suburb.

Approximately 180 players were on hand and, during the two camp games each participated in Saturday afternoon evening, some standouts made their selves noticeable immediately.

The tallest – and most impressive – in that group was 6-foot-10 Charles Bassey, a freshman at St. Anthony High in San Antonio who didn’t migrate to the United States (from Nigeria) until about three months ago.

Sunday hoops were popping at Lynwood, Westminster

October 4, 2015 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LYNWOOD and WESTMINSTER, Ca. – Courtesy the 710 and 405 freeways, Sunday proved a productive day for zeroing in on some of the best high school basketball individual – and team – talent in Southern California.

The first stop was at Lynwood High, where middle school hoops impresario Julius von Hanzlik held a “Julius V Select 24” double-dip, the first game pitting some of the best in the Southland’s Class of 2019 (freshmen) and the second with the Class of 2018 (sophomores) on display.

Many of the players who participated on Sunday also participated in the Sept.

Freedman, Bernard, Singleton lead All-West standouts

September 28, 2015 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

NORWALK, Ca. – The much-better-than-average depth in the western classes of 2018&19 was on display on Sunday’s second and final day of the Pangos All-West Frosh/Soph Camp at Cerritos Community College.

Wrapping up the action were Top 60 and Top 30 all-star games, which followed two rounds of games on Sunday morning and early afternoon.

In the first game the “White” jersey-wearing squad defeated its “Black” counterpart, 92-69.

Six-foot-five Trey Johnson – who, along with his father, made the 16-hour trek, by automobile, from Idaho Falls to Southern California to participate in the camp – scored 15 points for the winning squad to garner Most Outstanding Player honors (from my perspective, at least).

SoCal guards impress at Pangos Fr-So Camp Saturday

September 27, 2015 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

NORWALK, Ca. – Much of the very best in the western high school classes of 2018 and ’19 was on display Saturday afternoon and evening during the Pangos All-Frosh/Soph Camp at Cerritos College.

And the guards in those respective classes were especially impressive – and, often, spectacular – for much of Saturday.

*Spencer Freedman seemed to do pretty much whatever he so desired in the two games he played for the “Colorado” squad Saturday.

The left-handed Santa Ana Mater Dei High transfer (who had a very good freshman season at Santa Monica) scored at will, via mid- to deep-range jump shots and nifty drives, and also delivered passes where and when they needed to be delivered.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
