SANTA MONICA, Ca. – The University of Arizona Wildcats basketball program picked up another elite commitment from the Class of 2017 when 6-foot-8 forward Ira Lee revealed that he would be signing a national letter of intent with the Wildcats next month.

“It was a place I felt I could go, get immediate playing time and develop,” he said in a telephone interview Thursday morning. “And it’s also a program that is a national championship contender.”

Lee enrolled at the Crossroads School late in the summer.

Harmon, Wilson, Timme impress at Pangos Sunday

October 16, 2016 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

DALLAS – The second stop on the fall national Pangos All-Frosh/Soph circuit got a nice jolt of energy – and talent – Sunday.

Two sophomores from Guyer High in Denton showed up Sunday morning and easily played their way into Sunday afternoon’s Top 30 All-Star game that wrapped up the All-Frosh/Soph South Camp that was held at the Triple A/Focused Learning Academy.

Left-handed De’Vion Harmon, a one-time football standout who gave up the grid iron this summer to focus on hoops, made a compelling on-court argument that he’s the top point guard prospect in the Class of 2019 during the Oct.

Familiarity breeds Pangos dominance for Bassey

October 16, 2016 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

DALLAS – A year ago as a freshman, barely two months after having migrated to the U.S. from Nigeria, Charles Bassey was far and away the best player at the Pangos All-South Frosh/Soph Camp.

And, based on what was seen of him Saturday afternoon at the Triple A-Focused Learning Academy, it’s much of the same the second time-around at the camp for the now-sophomore at St. Anthony High in San Antonio.

The second and final day of the event tips off at 9 o’clock Sunday morning with four sets of games played across the three courts (meaning each team plays once) and wrapping up at noon before Top 50 (1:15 p.m.)

Classes of ’19 and ’20 shine at USA BB camp

October 10, 2016 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

COLORADO SPRINGS – A combined 39 members from the high school classes of 2019 and 2020 were on hand Saturday and Sunday during a “mini-camp” held by USA Basketball.

And over the course of the four two-plus hour sessions (which included drills and scrimmaging and also included 15 players from the class of 2017), each player showed why his name was identified and why he earned a round-trip ticket to Colorado Springs.

I went into detail about the 15 seniors who attended during a BurlisonOnBasketball report I filed Saturday night.

Porter shines at USA mini-camp Saturday

October 9, 2016 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

COLORADO SPRINGS – Fifty-four high school players were on hand Saturday during the opening of a two-day USA Basketball “mini-camp”.

The event, which concludes with morning and afternoon workout sessions on Sunday, will help in the formation of international touring teams in the summer and in making decisions on the bulk of the U.S. roster for the Hoop Summit in early April in Portland.

With a handful of McDonald’s All-American voters (including myself, Evan Daniels of Scout.com, Jerry Meyer of 24/7 and Eric Bossi of Rivals.com)

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
