Oak Ridge duo among Pangos Southeast standouts

November 5, 2016 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL – The 56 players in camp Saturday were roughly one-third of the number that attended each of the first four Pangos All-Frosh/Soph Camps this fall.

But what was lacking in terms of quantity was overshadowed by the quality of many of those players that were spread over the rosters of eight teams during the final of the All-Frosh/Soph camps – the first-ever Southeast version – at the Lake Brantley Athletic Complex.

Six-foot-six Kaleb Coleman and 6-4 Niven Glover, sophomores at near-by Oak Ridge High in Orlando, wasted little time is setting the tone for “Florida” in one of the four first-round games played Saturday evening.

Anthony, Abdur-Rahim bag Pangos All-East honors

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – The Pangos All-East Frosh/Soph Camp wrapped up Sunday afternoon in the RiverWinds Recreation Center in the fashion in which many high school hoops followers in these neck of the woods figured it would:

Six-foot-two guard Cole Anthony of Archbishop Molloy High in Queens was selected the event’s Most Outstanding Sophomore by camp founder and CEO Dinos Trigonis and co-director Gary Charles.

Anthony’s well-rounded skills and aggressive nature (at both ends of the floor) were in full bloom, upfront and center, over the event’s two days during which more than 200 other players from the high school classes of 2019 and ’20 were on display.

New Yorkers among Pangos headliners Saturday

October 30, 2016 By Frank Burlison 331 Comments

WEST DEPTFORD, NJ – Brooklyn’s Bishop Loughlin High had a couple of standouts on Saturday during the first day of the Pangos East All-Frosh/Soph Camp at the RiverWinds Center in this New Jersey suburb located about 15 miles north of Philadelphia.

It may have actually had more than just two standouts among the five players that represented it during the 200-plus player event whose second day begins Sunday morning at 9:30 and wraps up with its Top 30 All-Star Game that is scheduled to tip off at 2:30 in the afternoon.

My Top 25 from Pangos Midwest Frosh/Soph Camp

October 23, 2016 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LA GRANGE, Ill. – Southern California-based hoops entrepreneur  Dinos Trigonis has fronted a lot of “Pangos” camps and the ensuing all-star games that have wrapped each of them up since they made their debut nearly 20 years ago.

But it’s unlikely there have been many – if any – of those games to top the Top 30 contest played Sunday afternoon at the Pangos All-Midwest Frosh-Soph Camp at the Park District Recreation Center in this suburb of Chicago.

A mostly back-and-forth affair between the team wearing white jerseys and its black-wearing counterparts seemingly had turned in the white-wearers’ favor with a few minutes to go.

McCaffery, Pesek-Hickson are Pangos standouts

October 23, 2016 By Frank Burlison 294 Comments

LA GRANGE, Ill. – Patrick McCaffery got an early start Saturday on a sophomore season that will provide a platform to demonstrate why he is one of the very best high school players and college prospects in the national Class of 2019.

For those of you trying to sort out that sentence, rest assured that the very best high school players – based upon how guys happen to play while in high school – isn’t always the same thing as being among elite college prospects.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
