Etiwanda and St. Bernard joined by Trinity teams in Platinum semifinals at Damien Friday night

December 28, 2017 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LA VERNE, Ca. – Wednesday’s second day of action in the second The Classic at Damien boys’ basketball tournament proved just how as close to evenly matched as possible that the championship quarterfinals in the top two divisions were.

Need some examples?

Here we go, starting with the Platinum (top) division:

*Santa Margarita needed an overtime to knock off Pasadena (59-50).

*The outcomes for two other winners, St. Bernard (67-66) and Etiwanda (59-57), weren’t secured into the final possessions of the respective games.

*And St. John Bosco had to rally from a 12-point deficit at intermission – and hit nine 3s in the second half – to remain unbeaten with its decision against Rancho Christian (73-66).

Classic effort leads St. Bernard to Tuesday stunner

December 27, 2017 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

LA VERNE, Ca. – A year ago, the Playa del Rey St. Bernard boys’ basketball team won just one of the five games it played in the first The Classic at Damien.

Late Tuesday night, in the final game of the first day of the second year of the event, Coach Mitch Runco’s squad demonstrated that it has stepped up in class, both figuratively and literally, in 12 months.

Runco’s Vikings – having moved from the Silver to the (top) Platinum Division – pulled off the biggest stunner in the event’s brief history, upsetting the host Spartans, 67-61.

His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
