PHOENIX – Sunday’s final day of the first Section 7 Team Camp is set to bare the basketball “fruit” of a whole lot of work on the part of event organizers’ and high school players and coaches that have made this three-day gathering such a success for all concerned.

“Arizona” is big winner at Pangos AA Camp

June 3, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

NORWALK – The 17th Pangos All-American Camp wrapped up Sunday afternoon at Cerritos College with 60 or so players playing in the event’s two all-star games and with a lot of future college standouts among those non selected to the all-star camps.

That’s the caliber of prep basketball talent that annually participates in this event – it’s loaded with guys on the path to college scholarships and, for the very best, the NBA.

And, to no fault of how they might have performed, a lot of gifted and hard-working players, among the 108 who played over the weekend, didn’t make the all-star cut.

Who will challenge Mobley and Cunningham on final day of Pangos AA Camp?

June 2, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

NORWALK – Saturday’s Day II of the 17th Pangos All-American Camp only served to emphasize what was already a consensus of thought on the subject:

Evan Mobley and Cade Cunningham are a cut – or two – above the rest of the 100-plus players on hand at Cerritos Community for one of the most high-profile events in grassroots hoops.

Someone is going to have to turn in whooper performances in the final “conference games played Sunday morning and in the top all-star game later in the afternoon to upset the near-certain scenario expected to unfold with either Mobley (Rancho Christian in Temecula in SoCal) and Cunningham (Arlington, TX, by way of Montverde Academy in Florida) being tabbed No.

OK, how many of you will get the message in this Pangos Camp Friday rundown?

June 1, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

NORWALK – The 17th Pangos All-American Camp tipped off Friday night at Cerritos College with its annual gathering of future McDonald’s All-Americans and NBA first-round selections.

And, for the second year in a row, NBA scouts – the ones actually employed by the NBA, that is – were also in attendance.

With so many quality players to see and three games going on at the same time, one can get a bit of sensory overload if you spend as much time turning around to watch the game going on behind as you do watching the game in front of you.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
