Belmont Shore, Veritas in 17s Pangos Sweet 16 Sunday final

July 14, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

GARDEN GROVE – The Veritas club program will be represented in the championship games of each of the top 17s and 16s division in the Pangos Summer Sweet 16 Sunday afternoon at MAP Sports Facility.

The “International” squad (made up mostly of players originally from Latin and American countries) had to rally from 10 points down late to edge Arizona Firestone Elite, 54-52, late Saturday via the game-deciding layup from 6-foot-9 Deiman Reyes.

Coach George Zedan’s club also got clutch buckets from 6-7 forward Carlos Rosario and guard Julio Rodriguez in the final couple of minutes.

Lakeshow 17s knock off Daishen Nix-led Las Vegas squad

IRVINE – What did my spending 13 hours in the Momentous Center leave me with Friday – besides a $50-plus dent on my Visa card because of some insanely over-priced snacks, that is?

It gave me the opportunity to see some outstanding “club teams” and terrific basketball players – some of those, multiple times, on the second dame of The Hoop Circuit’s West Coast Challenge.

The last game of the evening was a cool matchup between Las Vegas-based “Simply Fundamental” and one the top 17s clubs in the west in NorCal’s Lakeshow Elite.

Compton Magic players among many All-West Camp standouts

July 8, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

NORWALK – The Fullcourt Press All-West Basketball Camp, held Saturday and Sunday at Cerritos College, served as nice “run up” to the NCAA’s “evaluation period” – in which coaches from its membership schools can watch players at camps and tournaments across the country – that is being held from this coming Thursday to Sunday.

There were approximately 150 players on hand, largely from Southern California but also from the central and north portions of the state, as well as Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, Alaska, Utah, Michigan and Kansas.

Ten standouts from Nike Elite 100 Camp

June 26, 2019 By Frank Burlison 600 Comments

ST. LOUIS – It took two days and Tuesday night’s session of games but I’ve watched each of the Nike Elite 100 Camp’s 10 teams play at least once.

As is always the case, a hefty portion of the nation’s upcoming junior and sophomore classes – in this case, Classes of 2021 and ’22, respectively – have been on display in Saint Louis University’s Simon Recreation Center.

I’m going to give you a list of the 10 players that most impressed me over the Monday and Tuesday games and drills minus the western-based guys such as Devin Askew and Wilhelm Breidenbach (Santa Ana, CA, Mater Dei), Paolo Banchero (Seattle O’Dea), Jaxon Kohler (Mt.

Bishop Gorman and SoCal clubs pick up Section 7 championships Sunday afternoon

June 24, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

PHOENIX – The Las Vegas Bishop Gorman Gaels used the championship game of the All About People bracket Sunday at Brophy Prep on the final day of the Section 7 Team Camp to demonstrate why they’ll be the top-ranked team in the west going into the 2019-20 season.

Coach Grant Rice’s team used superior overall quickness and the sizzling jump shooting of junior-to-be Will McClendon to knock off the likely No. 2-in-the-west Santa Ana (CA) Mater Dei Monarchs, 79-66.

McClendon hit six of his eventual seven 3-pointers in the first half while scoring a game-high 23 points to wrap up a 4-for-4 weekend that included victories over Skyline of Arizona, 72-59, Stockton (CA) Weston Ranch, 81-66, and Oakland Bishop O’Dowd, 78-56.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
