LA VERNE, Ca – The fourth Classic at Damien (Dec. 26, 27, 28&30), to be held in the Damien High Athletic and Event Centers, as well as on several area campuses, will showcase some of the very best players the Class of 2020 has to offer.

And 10 of the athletes in the five-division, 80-team event signed National Letters of Intent with NCAA-designated programs last in November.

The programs for eight of those players will be competing in the Platinum Division, the toughest post-Christmas tournament division anywhere in the country.

LAS VEGAS – The first day of the Tarkanian Classic, at Bishop Gorman High, ended with more than just a bit of optimism for the UCLA coaching staff and the Bruins’ followers.

Six-foot-five Daishen Nix, who signed a National Letter of Intent last month to enroll at Westwood in the summer, put all of his highly refined skill on display Tuesday night while scoring 39 points in Las Vegas Trinity International’s 71-57 victory over San Antonio-based Cornerstone Christian in a first-round game of the Pangos Elite 8 “prep school” team tournament.

Rancho Christian holds on despite Julian Strawther’s 44

December 15, 2019 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

PASADENA, Ca. – The “host” teams won five of the six games played Saturday during the inaugural SoCal-Vegas Showdown, fronted by Gerry Freitas and held at Pasadena City College.

In an entertaining finale that was televised by KDOC, Rancho Christian of Temecula held on to edge Liberty, 74-67, despite a dazzling 44-point effort by Gonzaga-bound Julian Strawther.

He dropped all 22 of his squad’s points in the fourth quarter as it cut the Eagles’ advantage to five points with 1:03 remaining.

The 6-foot-6 Strawther then picked off a pass in the Rancho Christian backcourt and appeared to be fouled in the act of shooting with 54 seconds to go.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
