September 13, 2020 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

ST. GEORGE, Utah – Reese Dixon-Waters, a 6-foot-5 senior at St. Bernard High (Playa del Rey, CA) who committed to USC nearly six months ago, was among the first-day standouts Saturday during the Full-Court Press All-West Camp.

Approximately 240 players – mostly from western states but including players from throughout the country – were on hand for the event, which wraps up with 12 Sunday morning “camp games” followed by three all-star games in the afternoon.

All games will be live-streamed and archived on BallerTV.

September 7, 2020 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

GILBERT, Az. – The Washington Supreme players and coached boarded their Sunday evening Phoenix-to-Seattle flight with four End of Summer Showcase victories tucked securely in the overhead storage.

Coach Carl Howell’s club, after rolling past Vegas Elite (82-60), had to rally from a 19-point deficit at intermission and then needed a “sudden-victory” overtime to edge Gamepoint of San Diego, 57-55.

Reserve guard Jerry Hayes Jr. (South Hill, WA, Emerald Ridge) scored a layup for the win in an overtime period in which the first team to score picked up the victory at the Inspire Courts facility in this Phoenix suburb.

September 6, 2020 By Frank Burlison Leave a Comment

GILBERT, Az. – The second and final day of the End of Summer Showcase looks to be highlighted by an 11:30 Sunday morning clash between what would have been two of the finest west coast-based 17s club basketball teams in “normal” (non-COVID 19) circumstances.

Vegas Elite (a member of the Nike-fronted EYBL program) and Washington Supreme (part of Under Armor’s grassroots program) hook up on court 7 in the Inspires Courts facility in this Phoenix suburb.

The game will be live-streamed by BallerTV, as will the other 35 games played that get underway at 9:30 PT.

Anderson leads seniors to win in NorCal Clash Sunday

August 31, 2020 By Frank Burlison 2 Comments

HAYWARD, Ca. – Cole Anderson’s clinching layup in the closing seconds secured the Class of 2021’s 117-113 victory over its 2022 counterpart Sunday evening at the Slam Academy during the NorCal Clash.

Anderson’s left-handed layup was set up by a steal and pass from 6-foot-9 DeMarshay Johnson (Richmond Salesian).

The 6-3 Anderson (Clovis West), who committed to UC Santa Barbara in the spring, continued to show why he may be as good a jump shooter as there is – not only in California but pretty much anywhere else, too, on the high school level.

Rotary making Pangos event a “Seattle Showcase”

August 30, 2020 By Frank Burlison 1 Comment

ST. GEORGE, UT – Day II of the Pangos Rocky Mountain Hoops Summit was more of the same:

End line-to-end line dominance by the Seattle-based Rotary program’s six teams here, and impressive play by one of the elite Class of 2022 post players, were on display in the Nets of Fire Sports Facility from early Saturday morning until almost Sunday morning.

Rotary’s top squad, the Black 17s, throttled two more Southern California-based teams (San Diego’s Border Boyz and Long Beach’s Belmont Shore) – 79-61 and 97-64, respectively.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
