LAGUNA NIGUEL – Twenty terrific viewing options are on tap during Wednesday’s opening night of CIF Southern Section Open and Division 1 boys’ basketball playoff action.

The No.’s 5 (St. John Bosco), 6 (Harvard-Westlake), 7 (Corona Centennial) and 11 (Corona del Mar) teams in the BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Top 50 drew byes in the Open play with their openers coming Friday night.

But No.’s 1 Sierra Canyon (vs. 9 Crespi), 2 Redondo Union (vs. 12), 3 Santa Margarita (vs. 10 Damien) and 4 Sherman Oaks Notre Dame (vs. 7 La Mirada) are the hosts in the four Open games played Wednesday at 7 o’clock.

Crean Lutheran (No. 13 in the Top 50), JSerra (15), Inglewood (14) and St. Francis (23) are the top four seeds in Division 1 and have home games Wednesday night vs. Santa Barbara (47), Pasadena (31), Tesoro and Rancho Christian (38), respectively.

A “fit” St. Francis – meaning, a healthy 7-foot-3 junior Cherif Millogo (pictured) is on the floor for the Golden Knights – would translate into Coach Todd Wolfson’s team having a more than reasonable shot at winning each playoff game, regardless of the opponent and location.

The L.A. City Section playoffs also begin Wednesday night, with No. 22 Palisades – opening at home against El Camino Real – the heavy favorite in the eight-team Open Division.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
