LAGUNA NIGUEL – Three days’ of games – and then a computer and the CIF Southern Section will let sort out the boys’ basketball divisions and release the results Sunday morning from its Los Alamitos headquarters.

The results of Baseline, Big VIII, Mission and Trinity league tournaments, as well as a Bay League finale, over the next three days will go a long way toward dictating the size and seeding in the Open Division, and the bracketing in the 32-team Division I field.

Check below and peruse the updated BurlisonOnBasketball.com SoCal Top 30 for a look at my pecking order – if I would doing the “pecking” for the Southern Section – if the pairings were released as you’re reading this.

My expectation is that the Open Division will be made up of eight, 10 or 12 teams while broken into pools.

*Mission League semifinals are set for Monday evening at 7 o’clock, with top-ranked Sierra Canyon playing host to No. 27 Loyola and No. 11 Crespi at No. 4 Notre Dame.

The championship game will be played Wednesday night at 7, on the home court of the best-remaining seed.

*Trinity quarterfinals are also on tap for Monday night.

No. 4 and 5 seeds Mater Dei (23 in the Top 30) and Orange Lutheran (26) tip off at 5:30, followed by 7:30 by JSerra (the No. 3 Trinity seed and No. 15 in the Top 30) and 6 seed Servite.

Both games will be played at Irvine Valley College.

The final two days of the Trinity tourney will be played at Hope International University in Fullerton, with Monday’s winners playing top seeds St. John Bosco and Santa Margarita – which have byes into the semifinals – at 5:30 and 7:30.

The third place (5:30) and championship (7:30) games Wednesday will decide the three automatic qualifiers to the CIF SS playoffs.

*Tuesday night will also have a key Bay League finale when No. 2 Redondo Union visits rival and No. 19 Mira Costa at 7.

The Baseline League tourney’s final two games are also played Tuesday night, with No. 8 playing host to No. 13 (at 6:30) for the league’ championship while Rancho Cucamonga is at Chino Hills (also at 6:30) for the league’s third automatic bid to the playoffs.

*Eastvale Roosevelt will serve as the neutral site for the Big VIII title game when No. 9 Centennial takes on Corona neighbor Santiago at 7 o’clock.

The teams played at Santiago on Jan. 23, with the visiting Huskies prevailing, 71-66.

*No. 14 Inglewood faces Leuzinger, at Morningside High, Tuesday night in the Ocean League tourney championship game.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
