A look at Tuesday’s CIF SS boys hoops playoff action

LAGUNA NIGUEL – The third round of the CIF Southern Section boys’ basketball playoffs is set for Tuesday night, with 40 games scheduled over the section’s 10 divisions.

And the L.A. City Section’s Open Division semifinals are scheduled to be played Saturday evening at L.A. Southwest College.

Here is a quick look at five of the Southern Section games that will be played Tuesday (in no order):

  Open

*Centennial at Redondo Union: The visiting Huskies take an 11-game win streak into the game, while the host Sea Hawks’ streak is at 12.

Both squads were in the Platinum Divisions of the Tarkanian Classic (Las Vegas) and Classic Damien, but the Huskies lost (to Timpview of Provo, UT, and Phoenix O’Connor, respectively) before they could collide with the Sea Hawks.

Centennial is led by Stanford-bound guard Isaiah Rogers, while Redondo Union has three high-quality seniors in its lineup in S.J. Madison (who signed with Nevada-Reno in November), Chace Holley (pictured/he committed to Pepperdine 10 days ago) and Devin Wright (an elite deep jump shooter likely to draw a lot of attention from NCAA D-I programs this spring).

*Harvard-Westlake at Santa Margarita: The teams had respective five- and 10-point home victories over Damien last week.

Each squad features three seniors who have signed with NCAA D-1 programs, Joe Sterling (Texas), Dominique Bentho (UC Irvine) and Amir Jones (Georgia State) of Harvard-Westlake, and Drew Anderson (Oregon State), Kaiden Bailey (Georgia Tech) and Brayden Kyman (Washington State) of the Eagles.

*St. John Bosco at Notre Dame: The outcome will, in large part, also be determined by the performances of their respective teammates.

But the visiting Braves are led by a 2026 McDonald’s All-American, 6-foot-9 Christian Collins, while the host Knights are paced by an almost certain 2027 McD’s AA, 6-3 NaVorro Bowman – California’s most gifted junior, IMO.

Division 1

*Village Christian at Crean Lutheran: This is a rematch of a Dec. 6 tournament final in Honolulu won by Crean Lutheran, 69-64, behind junior guard Hunter Caplan’s 29 points.

Village Christian got 18 points apiece from guards Will Conroy Jr. (a strong candidate for national freshman of the year) and junior Deon Lewis in the first meeting.

A key to the outcome will be how well the visiting Crusaders can contain the host Saints’ 6-11, University of Minnesota-bound Chadrack Mpoyi (who scored 29 points in the team’s overtime win at Coronado Santiago Friday night).

*Fairmont Prep vs. Inglewood at Morningside High: Not a lot of mystery as to the chances of the visiting Huskies knocking off the Sentinels:

How well can Fairmont Prep’s zone (anchored by 6-9 David Abisogun) slow down California’s all-time leading scorer Jason Crowe Jr.?

The left-handed McDonald’s All-American guard scored 54 points in his team’s 103-92 win at St. Bernard Friday night – the 10th time he produced at least 50 points in a game this season.

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
