LONG BEACH –  Yale University-bound Jonas Oware (pictured) scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds as Long Beach Poly cruised past Mayfair, 65-46, in one of the six basketball games played Saturday at Long Beach City College during the first Lute Olson Legacy Classic.

The event was held in honor of the late Hall of Fame member whose coaching stops included Long Beach City College and Long Beach State before he went on to the University of Iowa and Arizona.

His Wildcats’ team was the last western-based program to win a national championship (in 1997).

The Jackrabbits (12-6), who have a Moore League showdown at Millikan next Friday night, also got 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists from junior forward Isaac Hagens and eight points and five assists from senior point guard Nane Ofoebgu.

The Monsoons (10-7), who lost a Gateway League contest at La Mirada Friday night, missed 23 of 26 shots from the field while falling behind, 34-17, at intermission.

Josiah Johnson, one of the better unsigned senior guards in the west, missed 14 of his 18 field-goal attempts while leading Mayfair with 17 points, five rebounds, three assists and three steals.

In a San Joaquin League opener that was played at LBCC as part of the event, San Gabriel Academy (9-6) outscored Fairmont Prep by 14 points in the third quarter and went on to prevail, 54-35.

The Eagles (who won the State Division III title last March in Sacramento) got another outstanding effort from one of the state’s best freshmen guards as Zach Arnold went for a team-high 19 points, with three assists, four steals and just one turnover in 26 minutes.

Fairmont Prep (10-9), the CIF Southern Section Division 2AA winner last spring, got 17 points from Langston Ford.

In the earlier two high school games played:

*Campbell Hall 65, Laguna Hills 56: Game Most Outstanding Player Ean Britt (a 6-4 junior) scored 16 points, with five rebounds and five assists, as the Vikings improved to 9-9.

Sophomore guard Fletcher Freeman scored 20 points, with five assists, for the Hawks (8-9).

*Palisades 70, St. Paul 48: Twin juniors E.J. (21) and O.J. (11) Popoola combined for 32 points for the 5-10 Dolphins – the front-runners for the L.A. City Open championship next month.

Coach Jeff Bryant’s squad also got 11 points, 10 rebounds and four assists from 6-10 junior Julian Cunningham and 12 points, six assists, seven steals and three blocked shots from freshman guard Phillip Reed.

Senior William Bryson III, who came into the game averaging 33.2 points per game, was held to 23 points for the Swordsmen (7-14), missing 17 of his 24 shots from the field.

Prep Schools

*SoCal Academy 77, Phoenix Bella Vista Grind 60: seniors Kyle Davis and Trevon Carter-Givens and junior Mekhi Robertson (the game’s Most Outstanding Player winner) cored 19 points apiece as took a double-figure lead early in the second quarter and was never seriously threatened.

*Arizona Compass Prep 79, Wilson Academy (GA) 37: Junior forward DeMarcus Henry, who played at Mater Dei as a freshman and sophomore, scored 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds for the Dragons.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
