LAGUNA NIGUEL, CA – Redondo Beach will be the hub of upper-scale boys’ high school basketball this week.

Monday thru Thursday, Redondo Union High and Coach Reggie Morris Jr.’s Sea Hawks’ program play host to the Ryse Williams/Pac Shores Showcase and Tournament.

And the Take Flight Challenge returns Friday and Saturday at RUHS, capping a week in which 19 of the BurlisonOnBasketball SoCal Top 30 teams, plus the top squads from the CIF San Diego Section (Francis Parker) and Arizona (Millennium of Goodyear), are set to participate.

Four girls’ games are also set on campus during the week as part of the events, with the Sea Hawks playing Valenica Tuesday at 5:15 in the auxiliary gymnasium and then facing La Canada Wednesday at 5 o’clock in the main gym.

The other two girls games will be played on Saturday in the aux gym: Leuzinger vs. La Canada (8:30 a.m.) and Crossroads vs. Lynwood (10 o’clock).

Jason Crowe Jr. and Inglewood play in one of the six games (four in the main gym) set for Day 1, taking on another 4-0 squad, Cypress – the most underrated Orange County-based team – 6:30 Monday night.

Crowe (pictured) has climbed to No. 2 among the all-time career scoring leaders in California, his 3,489 points trailing only Baylor freshman Tounde Yessoufou. He poured in 3,659 points in his four seasons at St. Joseph in Santa Maria.

There are plenty matchups during the six days at Redondo Union pitting potential – some of them likely – CIF Southern Section Open Division clubs, two of those involving the host Sea Hawks: vs. San Gabriel Academy (Wednesday night/6:30) and Crespi (Saturday night/6:45).

Another game in that category is Crespi vs. JSerra (Wednesday night/8 o’clock).

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
