“Traditionally”, the day after Thanksgiving is consumed – pun intended – by leftovers, frenetic shopping and/or staying anchored to your recliner and watching football.

But those who come to this website for sustenance – pun intended – have another perspective on “tradition”:

High school hoops, pilgrims – yeah, that will be the last of the Thanksgiving puns.

There are multiple Southern California options on Friday that carry over into Saturday.

Those in the San Fernando Valley – or willing to make a drive, to Studio City, regardless of your local in SoCal – can hit up the first Winter Showcase, hosted by Harvard-Westlake High (3700 Coldwater Canyon Ave.) and David Rebibo’s Wolverines’ program.

Game begin at 3 o’clock Friday afternoon, when Crean Lutheran (No. 11 in the BurlisonOnBasketball preseason SoCal Top 30) takes on Cleveland of Reseda – expected to challenge for a slot in the L.A. City Section Open Division playoffs in February.

And there is another two-day “showcase” event in Manhattan Beach, where Mira Costa High (1401 Artesia Blvd.) and Coach Neal Perlmutter play host to the third Legends Beach Bonanza.

Action is set to tip off at 1 o’clock, with El Segundo vs. Venice as the first six games to be played Friday.

Three Las Vegas-region programs played in the final three games set for Friday at Harvard-Westlake.

*Democracy Prep challenges Redondo Union (No. 3, with wins last week over Crean Lutheran and Phoenix Sunnyslope) at 4:30.

*Coronado (Henderson) faces No. 18 Corona del Mar at 6. The Sea Kings are projected to be the best public-school squad in Orange County, with four returning starters paced by junior guard Maxwell Scott.

*And, in the Friday night finale at 7:30, the hosts (No. 2) take on Las Vegas powerhouse and Grant Rice-coached Bishop Gorman.

The event will host three games Saturday, with Woodland Hills Taft playing Valencia at 2 p.m., followed by Bishop Gorman and St. Paul (3:30) and Coronado and Harvard-Westlake (5).

The final three games at Mira Costa Friday evening project as the most compelling matchups of Day 1 for the event.

*St. Monica plays No. 27 Arcadia (led by sophomore Owen Eteuati Edwards) at 5:30, followed by No. 16 Damien and No. 25 St. Bernard at 7 and the host Mustangs play Loyola at 8:30.

Junior guard Zaire Rasshan averaged 23.4 points in five Rumble on the Hill games in Orange County last week for Damien, capping the performance with 32 points – including nine 3s – in the championship win over Canyon of Anaheim Saturday night and sharing event Most Outstanding Player honors with 6-foot-6 senior teammate Eli Garner.

Seven games are set Saturday at Mira Costa, beginning with 11 a.m.’s Colony-Crenshaw tilt and concluding at 8 p.m.  with Mira Costa vs. Francis Parker – led by 6-3 junior Tavid Johnson, the No. 1 team in San Diego.

Meet Frank

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
