Oodles of the Southland’s best hoopers congregate at Tustin High Sunday

TUSTIN, CA – Many of the boys high school basketball programs expected to be among the best in Southern California in the 2025-26 season were well-represented during the annual Hoops by Ugland/Skills Summit Sunday at Tustin High.

One hundred and forty-five players – spread across the four classes – were on hand for the nearly 8 ½-hour event.

The first couple of hours the players participated in fundamental drills stations conducted by the seven high school and club coaches and trainers that worked with camp founder and director Devin Ugland.

Then the players were spread across 12 teams, with each squad playing twice before things wrapped at about 5:15 in the evening.

Defending CIF Southern Section and State Open Division champion Roosevelt of Eastvale was represented by nine players, including the Mustangs’ only returning starter (senior guard Jackson Haggins) and forward Christian Benjamin, who had some quality efforts off the bench last season for the Brayden Burries-led squad.

Two transfers into Roosevelt, guards Sloane Harris and Semaj Carter (who started at Etiwanda and Rancho Verde, respectively), were also on hand.

A key member of the Mustangs’ 35-2 squad, sixth man Cameron Anderson, was one of the Sunday standouts.

But Anderson – the BurlisonOnBasketball top SoCal freshman for last season – was in the gym representing his new high school program, St. John Bosco.

The 6-4 guard (pictured/left) had a strong June with the Mustangs at the Section 7 and Cali Live events, as well as playing well in the spring and summer with the Compton Magics 16s’ club, before enrolling at the Bellflower-base school recently.

Anderson and Westchester transfer forward Tajh Ariza (not at the Tustin event) are  expected to win a big hunk of the on-court minutes available with the Braves this season via the losses of guards Chris Komin (now a freshman at Northern Arizona University) and Brandon McCoy, Jr. (a two-time, all-CIF SS selection no longer at SJB and expected to be at Sierra Canyon when classes begin there on September 2).

Joining Anderson among the sophomore standouts Sunday were guard Van Moczydlowsky (Crossroads), and forwards Achilles Orji (Etiwanda) and Isaiah Williamson (Los Alamitos).

The left-handed, 6-3 Moczydlowsky knocked in a lot of deep jumpers Sunday while also smashing a half-dozen or so dunks with either hand.

While he was a key member of the Roadrunners’ varsity as freshman, the 6-7 Orji (pictured/center) and 6-3 Williamson (the brother of another Roosevelt standout, Issac Wiliamson, now a freshman at UNLV) played junior varsity last season at programs heavy in seniors at their positions.

They will be key elements in those programs’ chase for league titles and deep playoff runs this season.

Among other seniors who had solid Sunday performances were three guys who didn’t have long trips to Tustin, guards Rodney Westmoreland III (Santa Margarita) and Tyler Holmquist (Sonora), and forward Gavin Kroll (Cypress).

Another was the returning starter at point guard for a potential Top 10 SoCal team in Long Beach Poly, Nana Ofoegbu.

The Class of 2027 (juniors in the coming season) was the deepest in quality prospects at the event.

Along with Harris of Roosevelt, Joey Albala (who started as a freshman but missed all but limited minutes in the playoffs last season because of a knee injury in October) and Richie Ramirez (a transfer from San Marcos in San Diego County) are the point guards from respective squads from Redondo Union and Mater Dei that will challenge for slots in the CIF SS Open Division playoffs in February.

Hunter Caplan (Crean Lutheran) and Nick Welch, Jr. (Rolling Hills Prep) were a dandy pick-and-roll combination for one of the camp teams.

They go into next season as one of the best jump shooters in the west and – perhaps – the strongest and post polished post player in Southern California, respectively.

And, after missing his two seasons at Windward because of knee injuries, Davey Harris (whose dad, Burt Harris, was a USC point guard and older brother, J.J. Harris, graduated from Windward last spring) continued to show why he’s on track to being one of the Southland’s best in the class this season.

The 6-6 Harris (pictured/right) has a lot of range on his jump shot and is a bouncy finisher on the drive.

And the most productive player among the 20 freshmen (Class of 2029) at Ugland’s camp was 6-3 JoJo Mariles (Damien).

Considering his performance at Whittier High Saturday – when he was the Most Outstanding Player during Alex Carmon’s Beach City Hoops “Inauguration” Camp for freshmen – it’s not surprising that the multi-skilled Mariles would hold up well against players as much as 3-plus years older Sunday.

But that he was doing things nearly as comfortably and efficiently despite the considerable step-up in competition was indicative of why he played as effectively as he did for the Spartans in June at the Section 7 and Cali Live.
