LAS VEGAS – Some of Southern California’s – and the west’s – best college prospects in the Class of 2026 were among the 23rd boys basketball Pangos All-American Camp Sunday night at Bishop Gorman High.

The Dinos Trigonis- and Pangos-fronted event – the best of its kind with dozens of McDonald’s All-Americans and NBA standouts about its alumni – tipped off with 100 or so players from across the country (and world).

With the players divided among 12 teams using names of colleges from the Big Ten and Atlantic Coast conferences, game action resumes Monday afternoon at 3 o’clock with each team scheduled to play two games.

The players return to Bishop Gorman Wednesday morning, with each of the “ACC and Big Ten” squads playing another game, culminating in an ACC-Big Ten “championship showdown” and Top 60 and Top 30 all-star games.

The camp is sanctioned by the NBA for attendance and evaluation by their franchises’ scouting personnel.

A multitude of media-types are on hand too, including multiple McDonald’s All-American voters (yours truly among them).

All camp games are live-streamed and archived by BallerTV.

In the first round of ACC play Sunday night, Florida State smacked North Carolina, 95-65.

Leading the way for the Seminoles were players from CIF Southern Section standout programs Santa Margarita (6-foot-3 Kaiden Bailey) and Redondo Union (6-5 S.J. Madison).

Bailey had a triple-double – 21 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, with four 3s – while Madison added 15 points, five rebounds and three assists while being the most active and relentless defender in the game.

They are also teammates on the Why Not Nike/EYBL squad, that is also represented by St. John Bosco standout Christian Collins and 6-9 post-grad (SoCal Academy) Trevon Carter-Givens here via the Duke and UCLA squads.

In the next round of games – featured the Big Ten-named squads – another Santa Margarita standout, Brayden Kyman, and Isaiah Rogers of Centennial in Corona, led the way as USC knocked off Oregon, 97-82.

The 6-8 Kyman (already committed to Washington State) scored 20 points while 4 for 4 from behind the arc while Rogers scored 26 points with six rebounds and seven assists.

Santa Margarita, Redondo and Centennial will be among the most high-profile (i.e., viewed by numerous NCAA Division-I affiliated coaches) during the June 20-22 Section 7 in Mesa (AZ) and the Cali Live the followed week in South Orange County in Southern California.

Salesian of Richmond – the program projected to be No. 1 in Northern California for the 2025-26 season, and also playing at Section 7 and Cali Live – was well represented here Sunday night.

Six-five Elias Obenyah (who played in the Top 60 all-star game here a year ago) teamed with Collins and David Abisogun (Fairmont Prep in Anaheim) as Duke lost Notre Dame and its sizzling Class of 2027 point guard, Jason Gardner, Jr. (Fishers High near Indianapolis).

Obenyah (pictured/courtesy Devin Ugland) could prove to be the top-Class of 2026 player from Northern California – his expanded versatility (he’s the de facto point guard for the Team Lillard 17s on the adidas 3SSB circuit) and improved jump shot showcasing why that’s the case.

Frank Burlison

Frank Burlison is a well-regarded basketball writer who was inducted into the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Hall of Fame in 2005. His opinions on the potential of high school and college players are widely respected and sought by college coaches and NBA scouts, personnel directors and general managers from coast to coast. Oh, yes – he can offer plenty of thoughts on movies, television and pop music. Yes, he can rank those, too. Hint: He’s a big The Godfather, Larry Sanders, The Wire and The Beatles loyalist.

I’ve known Frank for at least 35 years and have the utmost respect for his writing as well as his understanding of, and insight into, basketball. His ability to evaluate basketball prospects is almost impeccable. Most coaches and scouts watch a player and can tell you how good he is NOW. What separates Frank from the others is that he can watch the same player and tell you how good he can be two or three years down the line.
