Backcourt standouts draw crowd of college coaches Friday at San Juan Hills High

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – Pretty much every standout California- basketball guard from the classes of 2026, ’27 and ’28 drew the rapt attention from college coaches from across the country Friday during the first day of the third Boys California Live/presented by SCIBCA at the Ladera Sports Center and San Juan Hills high.

And a kid who is nearly fourth months away from playing his first regular-season high school game made sure that the Class of 2029 was well-repped, too.

Will Conroy, Jr. scored 31 points afternoon as Village Christian dropped an “overtime” (in the case, the first team hitting four points was awarded the win) loss to Branson, 63-60, early Friday afternoon at San Juan Hills, which is located about five minutes southeast of the LSC, the eight-court facility in Ladera Ranch that is the hub of the event.

Five hours later, at the LSC, the son of the former University of Washington standout guard and current USC assistant coach was at it again – then some.

Conroy (pictured left) scored 46 points – including eight 3s – as his team ran past St. Anthony, 101-68, in a Destination Irvine Bracket consolation quarterfinal.

But, in his first game Friday (I hung at SJHS from 8 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., and didn’t see the game with St. Anthony), Conroy wasn’t just about hunting shots but capitalizing his skill with the ball in his hands to create high-percentage shots for himself and his teammates.

And that was even despite a heavy dose of “face-guarding” when he was off the ball and hard-double teams/traps to prevent his dribble penetration.

As for some of those guards scheduled to be seniors in two months, Isaiah Rogers of Corona Centennial (pictured/right), Joe Sterling (Harvard-Westlake) and Jason Crowe, Jr. (Inglewood) were three significant reasons while the bleachers across the bench in SJH’s main gymnasium were all-day stops for college coaches.

The head coaches from Stanford (Kyle Smith) and UNLV (Josh Pastner) were among those watching when Rogers (pictured, right) knocked in multiple deep jumpers in the 58-26, Grip Spritz Bracket-opening win against Fairmont Prep.

And, in the final three games on SJH’s main floor Friday, the presence of Sterling and Crowe – with 6-foot-8, Christian Collins of St. John Bosco vs. San Diego Cathedral Catholic, sandwiched between those two in the schedule – drew coaches from USC (three-deep, including Head Coach Eric Musselman and Conroy, Sr.); UCLA (three deep), Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Oregon, Washington and Utah.

And those were just the ones I recognized, either by face, or polo or t-shirt logo.

Three other backcourt players in the Class of 2026, Acen Jimenez (whose floor-leadership, passing and shot-making helped La Habra knock off a much taller and deeper Mira Costa opponent, 68-6-1), and Jaden Bailes (a transfer from San Diego St. Augustine who will help JSerra stay in the hunt for a Trinity League title and CIF SS Open Division bid in 2026; his jump shot was tight and accurate in the 68-33 win over Riverside Poly and another superb senior-to-be guard, Jrob Croy) were also Friday standouts at SJH.

Action resumes at both sites Saturday morning at 8:30, with most of the elite programs in California, Arizona and Nevada trying to advance to Sunday bracket championship games.
