Plenty of quality hoops in “June warmups” over the Memorial weekend

LAGUNA NIGUEL – With the all-important June competition in front of NCAA Division I coaches just around the corner, there were two top-notch boys’

basketball events held in Anaheim and Long Beach over Memorial Weekend.

*The host program came away with top championships in the Magic Memorial (held at the Open Gym Premier facility just around the corner from the Magic Kingdom), with the Compton Magic 17s, 16s and 15s adidas 3SSB-affiliated squads bagging those divisions.

*And, at McBride High in the east side of the LBC, the Nothing But Net Memorial Weekend Showdown/presented by Pangos showcased a litany of the best that the classes of 2026, ’27 and ’28 have to offer in Southern California next season – as well as during the Section 7 (Mesa, AZ) and Cali Live (Ladera Ranch Sports Center) over the final two weekends of June.

With Compton Magic 17s standouts Cameron Williams (Phoenix St. Mary’s) and Bruce Branch (Gilbert, AZ, Perry) in Europe for an adidas-fronted event, another Arizona-based player – 6-foot-8 Kade Snyder of Sunnyslope in Phoenix  – was the unofficial Most Outstanding Player in the 17s Battlezone bracket.

Snyder (whose father, Kirk Snyder, was a standout at Upland High and Nevada-Reno, and an NBA first-round selection) is a key element to what is projected as the top team in Arizona in 2025-26.

Earning similar tags for the 16s and 15s were current freshmen Joshua Lowery (6-4/Legacy Christian Academy in Valencia) and Donovan Palmer (6-8/Chandler in Arizona), respectively.

While the Magic Memorial Tournament was spread over four days, the NBNM event was limited to Saturday and Sunday.

But there was no shortage of terrific club matchups that usually involved multiple noteworthy established standouts – many of which are among the better college prospects in the region.

Among the Saturday standouts were Tyler Lopez (Los Alamitos), Acen Jimenez (La Habra), Drew Anderson (Santa Margarita) and David Abisogun (Fairmont Prep) – each of which will be among the seven or eight best Orange County-based seniors next season.

The 6-9 Anderson (who normally plays for the adidas 3SSB-front Jalen Green 17s but was when Orange County’s KOB Saturday) is one of four projected returning starters for the program that shared the Trinity League title with St. John Bosco last season while playing in the CIF SS Open Division playoffs.

The 6-5 Lopez was the sixth man for the Griffins’ CIF SS Division 1 championship club last season and should challenge to lead Orange County in scoring as a senior.

Lopez has played for Elev8 this spring but was knocking in jumpers and finishing on drives with ease in two games for the Belmont Shore squad Saturday.

The 6-1 Jimenez (who helped lead La Habra to the 2024 CIF SS 3AA title) and 6-9 Abisogun (whose team bagged the CIF SS 2AA crown last season) are teammates on the adidas/3SSB Dream Vision 17s.

Each will lead their high school teams in eight combined games at Section 7 and Cali Live with hundreds of college programs’ coaches expected to be in attendance.

No Class of 2026 guard played better over the weekend at McBride than did Elijah Smith of Damien.

“Smitty” led Prodigy Elite’s 17s two a couple of impressive Sunday wins, scoring 25 points against KOB (83-53), then dropping 13 points with eight assists in an “upset” of the Nike/EYBL Why Not 16s team, 56-53.

The Why Not club (and its 15s counterpart) were at McBride Sunday because they weren’t in Kansas City for the last spring stop on the EYBL circuit.

Most of the 16s roster was on the 15s team that won the Nike Peach Jam last summer, including forwards Demarcus Henry (Mater Dei) and Chris Sanders (Redondo/he was sidelined with an ankle sprain) and guards Malcolm Price (Santa Maria St. Joseph) and Cole Holden and Pierre Thompson (Harvard-Westlake).

That squad was also joined by SoCal’s BurlisonOnBasketball top sophomore of 24-25 NaVorro Bowman, who helped  Notre Dame of Sherman Oaks to runner-up spots to Roosevelt in the CIF SS and State Southern Region Open playoffs.

But the 5-9 Smith – who started at Damien for the past two seasons – was too savvy, too quick and too precise in his dribbling, passing and shooting decisions for the Why Not 16s defenders to cope with while directing his team’s attack.

Smith (pictured) should be on a short list – pun intended, naturally – on any pecking order of California’s best sub-six footers in the Class of 2026.

A few hours later the Why Not 16s clicked on all cylinders while cruising against the gifted Dream Vision 16s’ team (that included 2027 standouts in 6-9 Mahamadou Diop of San Gabriel Academy and 6-2 Siincere Hudson of Inderkum in Sacramento, as well as 2028 Arizona guard L.J. Diamond), 85-71.

Earlier Sunday, the Why Not 15s edged the Prodigy Elite 15s, 66-65, in a contest that pitted two of the state’s top 2028-point guard prospects in Karter Butler (Corona Centennial) of Why Not and Aiden Shaw (Bishop Amat) of Prodigy Elite.

Two dynamic jump shooters on display Sunday were Izaiah Fiallos (a senior-to-be at Rancho Cucamonga) and Noah Zeola (who attended Marina as a freshman but will play for Orange Lutheran in ’25-26) – each with Belmont Shore.

Fiallos could challenge Smith and Eli Garner of Damien, and Samuel Funn of Etiwanda (the other senior-to-be on the Prodigy Elite 17s) of Baseline League Player of the Year honors next season.

And I can’t recall seeing anyone from the regional Class of 2028 that shoots it from behind the arc with the consistent success that Zeola has over the past month.
