Six unbeatens in 17s after first EYBL weekend

MESA, AZ – Six 17s boys’ basketball teams finished the first weekend of the 2025 Nike/EYBL 3-zip after play wrapped early Sunday afternoon in the Arizona Athletic Grounds Sports Complex.

The Merritt Division’s Team Takeover, Oakland Soldiers, New York Rens and New York PSA were 3-0 while Team Why Not and CP3 were unbeaten in the Raveling Division.

As expected, the Team Takeover-Utah Prospects showdown was the most competitive game in the division Sunday, with the team based in the Metro-DC area prevailing in overtime, 82-78.

Six-foot-three Jordan Smith, Jr. (Paul VI in Chantilly, VA) once again was the most impactful player I watched at both ends of the floor here, scoring 24 points (six of those in OT) with five steals for Team Takeover.

Smith missed on a drive into traffic, but guard Khaliq Carson (Bishop Ireton in Alexandria, VA) grabbed the rebound and was fouled with .3 on the clock – and swished both free throws to send the game into the four-minute extra period.

Forward Qayden Samuels (Bishop McNamara in Forestville, MD) led TT with 29 points while  guard Ikenna Alozie (Dream City Christian in Glendale, AZ) and forward Dean Rueckert (Timpview in Provo) scored 23 and 18, respectively, for the Utah Prospects.

*The Oakland Soldiers cruised past Team Final, 71-58, as Inglewood High’s Jason Crowe, Jr., (pictured) led the way with 28 points for a 25.3 ppg weekend.

*Yet another dynamic Class of 2026 point guard, Dylan Mingo (Long Island Lutheran), averaged 23.3 points and 7.0 rebounds per game for PSA.

*Six-five Jasiah Jervis (Stepinac in Long Island) average 17 ppg for the Rens, who edged Jet Academy Sunday, 58-56.

*In the Raveling 17s games, SoCal-based TWN – which edged the New York Lightning and Mokan Elite in its first two games – had a much easier go of it Sunday while rolling past The Family (Michigan), 86-64.

A balanced attack – paced by Christian Collins of St. John Bosco (15 points and 10 rebounds per game), Kaiden Bailey of Santa Margarita (14.0 points and 3.7 assists per game) and S.J. Madison of Redondo Union (11.3 ppg) – was the SoCal’s squad’s advantage all weekend.

And 6-5 Kohl Rosario (Moravian Prep in Hudson, NC) averaged 16.3 ppg – while hitting seven shots from behind the NBA’s 3-point line – to help North Carolina-based Team CP3 finish unbeaten.

*Three western 16s programs were unbeaten over the weekend.

Chris Sanders (Redondo Union) had 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists and four steals as TWN knocked off Vegas Elite (which got 36 from Gabe Nesmith of Prolific Prep), 92-77 on Sunday.

Fellow SoCal sophomores helped Paul George Elite (Josiah Nance of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame/13.7 ppg) and Arizona Unity (Gene Roebuck of La Mirada/17.7 ppg) go 3-0 as well.
